Application Support Engineer — Job Description

Role summary

Provides technical support and operational ownership for production applications, resolving incidents, maintaining availability, and enabling stable releases while collaborating with development, QA, and product teams.

Key responsibilities

Triage, diagnose, and resolve production incidents across application stacks (web, API, backend services); escalate and coordinate with engineering when needed.
Monitor application health and user impact using observability tools (logs, metrics, tracing); respond to alerts and participate in on‑call rotation.
Reproduce, document, and track defects; provide clear RCA and remediation plans; validate fixes in staging and production.
Manage incident communication with stakeholders and customers, including status updates and post‑incident reports.
Deploy, rollback, and support releases and hotfixes in coordination with CI/CD and release engineering.
Maintain runbooks, playbooks, knowledge base articles, and support documentation for common issues and operational tasks.
Perform root-cause analysis and implement permanent fixes or mitigations to reduce repeat incidents and manual toil.
Support application configuration, integrations, and third‑party services; manage credentials and secrets per security policies.
Automate repetitive support tasks with scripts and tooling (Python, Bash, PowerShell) and improve operational runbooks.
Assist with capacity planning, performance tuning, and log retention/cost optimization for production environments.
Work with product and engineering to validate new features from a supportability and operational perspective.
Provide L2/L3 support for customers, participate in escalations, and occasionally support customer-facing troubleshooting sessions.

Qualifications

Education: BS in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
Experience: 2–5+ years in application support, SRE, DevOps, or operations roles; senior positions 5+ years.
Technical skills: Strong debugging skills across application stacks, familiarity with Linux/Windows servers, networking basics, and common web architectures.
Observability & tooling: Experience with monitoring, logging, and tracing tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Opensearch, Datadog, New Relic).
Scripting & automation: Proficient in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation and diagnostics.
CI/CD & deployment: Familiar with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI) and release processes.
Databases & integrations: Comfortable querying relational/NoSQL databases and troubleshooting API/service integrations.
Security & ops: Knowledge of secrets management, IAM basics, and incident response best practices.
Soft skills: Clear communication, customer focus, prioritization under pressure, and teamwork.

Working conditions

Production‑facing role with on‑call duties and potential after‑hours incident response; hybrid or on‑site depending on company needs.
Fast‑paced environment balancing incident response, project work, and documentation.

Performance metrics

Mean time to acknowledge (MTTA) and mean time to resolve (MTTR) incidents.
Number of incidents reduced through permanent fixes and automation.
Support ticket SLA adherence and customer satisfaction (CSAT).
Runbook coverage and accuracy, and percentage of support tasks automated.

Pay: $65.32 – $84.34 per hour
