Primary objective
Under the direction of the Business Manager and Principal, to maintain the school premises, its buildings, grounds, and
property in a functional, neat, and orderly condition and provide support for staff and students according to school policy
and procedures and Health and Safety regulations.

Context statement
Forrest Parade School is located in Palmerston and caters for up to 140 students with special needs. The school offers
specialised and individualised programs for students who have been identified as having moderate and severe intellectual
and/or multiple disability who are aged from 3 ½ to 12 years. Staff have an exciting opportunity to contribute as an integral
team member to the development of the culture, vision, and structure of the school

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Inspect, unlock and tidy the school premises each morning before start time. Report immediately any unusual activity e.g.

vandalism, break in etc.
2. Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school buildings and grounds that require technical,

general handyman or tradesman skills as required. Carry out a range of tasks to make sure the school premises are in a
neat and orderly condition.

3. Action potential health and safety risks by immediately reporting or exercising judgement in sorting out the problem.
4. Assist in maintenance of the school learning garden, together with maintenance of the whole school irrigation system.
5. Maintain the cleanliness of the pool and reporting any potential issues.
6. Assist with the preparation of school excursions, camps, sports days and other special events as required, including

transporting students and staff in school vehicles as required and undertaking collection of stores and making deliveries.
7. Assist with moving/installation of furniture, fittings and equipment as required, together with undertaking the ongoing

maintenance of a variety of push bikes.
8. Liaise daily with the Principal and Business Manager to ensure timely communication and resolution of operational issues.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to negotiate priorities, meet deadlines, work independently, carrying out inspections and minor

maintenance of buildings drawing on experience from working within the framework of the Work Health and Safety
Guidelines.

2. Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with and monitor the work of external contractors, and the ability to carry out
physical duties, including heavy lifting.

3. Understand all issues pertaining to the security of the premises and surrounds, and the ability to monitor the
implementation and effective management of school security.

4. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students and people with disability and from diverse cultures, and work
as part of a team and capacity to use ICTs to communicate, record and report the status and progress of works
undertaken.

5. Hold a current Working with Children Clearance Notice, or have the ability to obtain, as well as a current LR Class NT
Driver’s License.

6. Relevant Trades Certification.

Desirable
1. Experience working within a school setting or similar will be highly regarded.
