Details: Prenatal Family Response and Engagement includes the coordination and case management of supports and interventions, providing referrals for support services and to community providers or other government services, liaison with the hospitals, PEP, MACH, AMC, Perinatal Infant Mental Health Consultancy Service, and community agencies. Functions also include cross border liaison with hospitals, interstate child protection agencies and various services including Karinya, Uniting, Toora, QE2 and other local support services. This team manage and send prebirth alerts to hospitals within ACT and interstate.

The Prenatal Practitioner works as part of the Family Response and Engagement Team within the Children, Youth and Families Division of the Health and Community Services Directorate (HCSD). This role provides targeted and intensive support to pregnant people and families expecting a child who may be experiencing complex vulnerabilities that place the unborn child at risk of significant harm.

The position supports families to build parenting capacity, access services, and develop safe, stable environments before and after the birth of the child. The role emphasises early engagement, voluntary participation, and collaborative service planning to reduce the need for statutory intervention. It aligns with the ACT Government’s commitment to early intervention, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination, and child-centred, family-focused practice.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

Relevant tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Social Welfare, Social Science or related discipline are essential. Please note: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who do not have these qualifications, but who have appropriate and relevant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage and experience are eligible to apply.
CYPP3 must have at least two years of practical experience working with children, young people and/or their families in a social work/case management role.
Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra
Prior to commencement, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
Driver’s License (C class) is essential.
As this role is likely to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and young people, cultural awareness, the capacity to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is highly desirable.
