Primary objective
As a member of a team, and under professional supervision, provide services to children, young people and their families aimed at
reducing the risk of harm to children, in accordance with Departmental policies and procedures and the Care and Protection of
Children Act.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Under professional supervision, plan and deliver family support, out of home care and protective services to Aboriginal and

Islander children, young people and their families, using casework, group work and community work methods.
2. Act as a mentor to other Aboriginal Community Workers, provide cultural advice to non-indigenous staff and act as a cultural

broker in Departmental interactions with Indigenous clients.
3. Act in an advocacy/brokerage role to enhance networking and maintain open communications within and between programs,

other agencies/services, and Aboriginal communities.
4. Undertake community work initiatives as required to build community capacity and enhance self-management of child and

family service provision.
5. Ensure the availability of reliable data through the accurate and timely recording of information on the Departments client

information and case management systems.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Advanced Diploma in Community Services or equivalent.
2. Experience in living within the framework of Aboriginal and Islander cultural values and lifestyles, and representing these

Indigenous perspectives, in addition to a demonstrated knowledge of cultural issues, including social, economic and political
issues, affecting the delivery of welfare services to Aboriginal and Islander peoples.

3. Previous experience working with children, young people and their families in a statutory setting, and demonstrated ability to
communicate appropriately with a range of health/welfare clients and colleagues.

4. Advanced skills in child protection, evidenced by experience in contested case management and preparation of court reports;
working knowledge of welfare practice and theory, ethics and current issues; and skills in the assessment and analysis of
individual and family dynamics.

5. Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time effectively, accept responsibility; contribute to ongoing quality
assurance; program development; and the professional development and learning needs of colleagues.

6. Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Islander children, young people and
their families, which strengthen community capacity so that families can provide for family members with minimum dependence
on external agencies.

7. Demonstrated skills in the use of computers and an ability and willingness to undertake training in the program’s computer
based data entry system.

8. Preparedness to undertake overnight travel to remote communities and hold a current NT driver’s license or the ability to
acquire same for a manual vehicle.

Desirable
1. Ability to speak a local Aboriginal language.
