Primary objective
To provide the NT Government and its Authorities and Instrumentalities with the best possible legal service either personally or through
the proper management and supervision of staff in the Commercial Division. Participate in the management of the Solicitor for the
Northern Territory so as to ensure the provision of high quality, timely and cost-effective legal services to Government and its Agencies.

Context statement
The Commercial Division provides legal advice and representation in relation to a wide range of general commercial matters to the
Northern Territory, its agencies and statutory bodies.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and documentation to clients and/or conduct Commercial and Aboriginal Land matters of a major/complex or

sensitive nature.
2. Supervise legal staff in the Division concerned to ensure that matters they are working on are conducted in a timely, efficient and

professional way.
3. Ensure that all advice and services provided by the Division are accurate and appropriate and that ethical standards are maintained

by all professional staff in line with their responsibilities as legal practitioners.
4. Generally manage the Division to ensure its optimum efficient running and achievement of work targets by staff.
5. Provide advice, guidance and leadership to professional staff within the Division.
6. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
7. Manage the budget allocation of the Division.
8. Report to the Executive Director Legal Services, Attorney-General’s Department on the progress of matters of interest and the

Division’s performance generally.
9. Attend management group meetings of the SFNT and otherwise assist in management of the Division as required.
10. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Prepare and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses clearly and

effectively.
11. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines and accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all

documents produced.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission to practice as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the NT or eligibility for such admission (any person eligible for

admission will be required to be admitted if appointed to this position).
2. Balanced judgment, together with well-developed conceptual and analytical skills.
3. Extensive experience in relevant areas of law and the development of legal policy at a senior level.
4. Significant experience in the management and development of professional staff including juniors and administrative staff.
5. Ability to negotiate effectively and to communicate in a highly professional manner and an ability to interact effectively with people

from diverse cultures.
6. Ability to cope with pressure and to work as part of a team.

Desirable
1. Experience with and the ability to oversee and prepare budgets and be accountable for expenditure.
2. A good knowledge of the Territory, its laws and the workings of government.
3. Experience in liaison with ministerial personnel and with senior public sector personnel.
