About Us

Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.

CCV

The County Court of Victoria is established pursuant to the County Court Act 1958. It has original and appellate jurisdiction and is the principal trial court in the State of Victoria. The Court hears over 12,000 criminal, common law, and commercial cases each year. The County Court has unlimited monetary jurisdiction in common law and commercial matters. In its criminal jurisdiction, the Court hears all indictable offences except treason, murder, and related offences.

There are a total of 80 Judges of the Court and over 300 staff, including judicial support staff. The County Court regularly conducts circuit sittings at 12 circuit courts situated in major centres throughout regional Victoria.

The County Court is committed to continuous improvement in accordance with the International Framework for Court Excellence. The Court's vision is to be a leader in court excellence, delivering the highest standard of justice to the community and inspiring public confidence in the rule of law.

About the Role

As a Commercial Division Lawyer, you will play a key role in supporting the active management and triage of proceedings across the Commercial Division. You will work collaboratively with the Head of the Commercial Division, judges in charge of specialist lists, Judicial Registrars and Registry staff to ensure matters progress efficiently and are ready for hearing.

Key responsibilities include:

Conducting regular mediations and case conferences in a range of proceedings at various stages of the interlocutory timetable
Case analysis and recommendations for case conferences or mediation
Proactive engagement with practitioners, promoting early resolution of interlocutory disputes, avoiding judicial intervention where possible
Actively develop and implement best practices within the Commercial Division
Maintaining and updating internal and external documents ensuing accuracy with the County Court Civil Procedure Rules 2018, Civil Procedure Act 2010 and current practice

About You

The ideal candidate will have post-admission experience in commercial litigation. This role is ideal for an experienced lawyer seeking to apply their legal expertise in a collaborative, solutions-focused environment while engaging meaningfully with the judiciary and court users.

You will have:

exceptional communication skills; both written and verbal
strong analytical and legal writing skills
the ability to lead and work as a part of a high performing team within a dynamic environment
strong stakeholder and relationship management skills, using expertise to effectively address stakeholder issues
highly developed conceptual and organisational skills and knowledge

Qualifications

Applicants are required to be, or eligible to be, an Australian Legal Practitioner. Ideally, you will have post-admission experience in commercial litigation.

Interest and experience in alternate dispute resolution and accreditation as a mediator will also be well regarded, though not required.
