Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and enthusiastic medical practitioners to join our team as a Colorectal Clinical and Research Fellow in the Colorectal Unit for the 2027 Clinical Year (commencing February 2027).
About the Colorectal Unit
The Colorectal Research Fellow role is based within the Colorectal unit across Austin Main, The Surgery Centre, Mercy and Warringal sites and is required to work in coordinating the well-managed patient care. The role reports to the Colorectal Head of Unit, Mr David Proud.
The Colorectal Unit provides Colorectal services to patients across Austin Health. Emergency and inpatient services are based at the Austin Hospital while Specialist Clinics and Endoscopy are based at both the Austin Hospital and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital sites. In addition, a consultative service is provided for other units within the health service.
About the role
The Colorectal Clinical and Research Fellow is a post FRACS position supporting the CSSANZ Fellow to assist with out of hours operating and weekend ward rounds.
The Fellow is expected to:
- Conduct weekend ward rounds and on-call every second weekend, with operating as required
- Attend Friday outpatient clinic and MDM
- Backfill CSSANZ fellow leave and selected endoscopy, manometry and theatre lists as required, including at Mercy Hospital for Women (Heidelberg) and Warringal Private Hospital
- Coordinate research activities for the Colorectal unit including supervision of medical student research projects (University of Melbourne)
About you
To be successful in this role you must:
- Be a Registered Medical Practitioner with full AHPRA registration
- Successfully passed FRACS part II exam in General Surgery
- A commitment to Austin Health values
- Substantial knowledge and expertise of the role and function of the Colorectal Unit
- Advanced clinical assessment skills
- Evidence of approved English language tests to meet National Boards’ English language skills registration standard
There are currently five English language tests that are accepted by National Boards:
- Cambridge - C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (paper and computer at test centre only)
- IELTS Academic - International English Language Testing System (Academic – paper and computer at test centre only)
- OET - Occupational English Test (on paper or computer based in testing centre)
- PTE Academic - Pearson Test of English Academic (computer at test centre only)
- TOEFL iBT - Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (computer at test centre only)
