Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) is a not-for-profit organization working for people with spinal cord injury (SCI). We are passionate about continually improving our service offerings and driving innovation to provide maximum opportunity for those lives affected by traumatic injury. With an objective to carry out and support the organization in the achievement of its vision “A society without barriers for people with SCI”.

SCIA was founded by people with Spinal Cord Injuries. We employ and support SCI disabilities and at present they make up 33% of our staff.

About the role..
The Peer and Family Support team work in the spinal injury units around Sydney and in the community to help people who are newly injured regain their independence, adjust to life with an injury and improve their overall wellbeing. The team share lived experience and to assist with the practical application of core knowledge and skills for people with injuries and their families.
The principle purpose of this role is to assist clients by building rapport and offering full support and knowledge to the best of their ability to people with SCI.
The Peer and Family Support team are out and about in the community ensuring they have the latest information on new equipment, assistive technology, products and services. Whether this is accessing care, modifying their home, or finding out the best transport options in the community, the Peer and Family Support team coordinate SCI people with other organisations and share their combined knowledge to offer full support. We know that everyone’s post injury experience is different. We assist without judgement.
This position has an inherent requirement for the successful candidate to have lived experience with a spinal cord injury. The role involves providing peer‑based support, guidance, and advocacy to individuals with spinal cord injuries, and the organisation has identified that lived experience is essential to effectively perform these duties.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assist clients with planning for services, provide case management services, and provide operational service delivery, which may include peer support, advocacy and information.
- Establish good relationships with other organisations, allied health workers and medical practitioners in the Spinal Injury Units and community to promote issues that affect people with a SCI
- Develop appropriate relationships with relevant people associated with the person that will benefit the support provided. In addition to this, provide support services to family members and participate in family forums as required.
- Undertake and complete a number of important administration duties, including the creation/completion of goal setting and outcome based plans, documentation of any interactions/contacts made with clients, time-based recording of tasks including client interaction
- Uses relevant communications and technology systems for creating/maintaining service records and for billing purposes
- Visit clients in the Spinal Units in Port Kembla, Wollongong and Liverpool (on request) and the community to provide individualised peer support and education
- Participate in group peer support, information and education sessions, social events, expos and cases conferences. This includes occasional evening or Saturday work.

- Proven ability to work positively with people to reach their individual goals
- Ability to listen and take direction from clients and work under regular supervision
- All SCIA staff must obtain and maintain a clear working with vulnerable people check
- Adheres to SCIA policies and procedures and all other relevant government legislation and standards, including workplace health, safety and well responsibility
- Have own transport with the ability and willingness to travel
Desirable Criteria:
- Equivalent to VET Certificate II in relevant studies or equivalent experience
- A proven track record of building strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders
- Demonstrates confidentiality and diversity awareness
- Adopts a flexible approach and personal accountability
- Able or individually or as part of a team, organized and takes initiative.
