JOB LOCATION: Woodend VIC 3422
JOB TYPE: Part-time, Casual
Arrow Health is seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join our private addiction treatment and mental health program at The Bentinck in Woodend, in the beautiful Macedon Ranges. This is a rare opportunity to work with a captive patient cohort in a regional residential setting, where continuity of care, time for reflection, and strong therapeutic relationships make it possible to drive real, lasting change in people’s lives
Why this role is different
- Regional residential setting in Woodend – close enough to Melbourne for an easy commute, far enough to support genuine recovery away from triggers.
- Stable, engaged patient cohort participating in structured addiction and mental health programs, allowing you to see the impact of your interventions over time.
- Supportive multidisciplinary team including counsellors, case managers, nursing, outpatient and aftercare clinicians, and facilitators, all working within a coordinated addiction and mental health framework.
- Clear scope of practice focused on specialist psychiatric assessment, formulation, treatment planning and medication management, without operational management responsibilities or 24/7 on‑call, unless separately contracted
About the role
As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide specialist psychiatric consultation to residents and patients within Arrow Health’s addiction treatment and mental health programs. You will work as part of the clinical leadership team, collaborating closely with the CEO, Director of Nursing and senior clinicians to plan, deliver and evaluate high quality, recovery‑oriented services.
Key responsibilities include:
- Comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnostic formulation and risk assessment, including dual diagnosis and complex comorbid presentations.
- Development of evidence‑based treatment and management plans, including pharmacological and non‑pharmacological interventions, integrated with addiction treatment.
- Medication prescribing and review in line with Victorian legislation, NSQHS standards and Arrow Health medication policies, with particular care around benzodiazepines, S8s and off‑label use.
- Integration of psychiatric care with detoxification and withdrawal management, relapse prevention planning and outcome measures.
- Providing secondary consultation, education and support to the multidisciplinary team.
- Participation in clinical governance activities, including audit, peer review and quality improvement.
You will not be responsible for nursing supervision or operational management, and primary psychotherapy is delivered by the broader multidisciplinary team, although brief therapeutic interventions may be provided where clinically indicated.
About you
Essential:
- Specialist registration in Psychiatry with AHPRA.
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent, or working towards such qualifications.
- Demonstrated experience in the assessment and management of mental health conditions, including complex and psychiatric conditions.
- Strong understanding of addiction, recovery‑oriented practice, and the interface between specialist mental health and AOD services.
- High‑level communication, collaboration and clinical leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to clinical governance, continuous quality improvement and adherence to NSQHS, NSMHS and relevant legislation, including the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act (Vic) and Privacy Act 1988.
What we offer
- A meaningful role where you can see tangible change in a defined patient cohort over the course of their stay.
- Collegial, values‑driven culture with strong support from leadership and the multidisciplinary team.
- Opportunity to shape and enhance a high quality, abstinence and harm‑minimisation based AOD and mental health service.
- A tranquil regional parklike setting in Woodend, offering work–life balance and an environment that supports both patient recovery and clinician wellbeing.
