What does this opportunity involve?
- A structured, 52-week training program for physiotherapists or occupational therapists interested in hand therapy
- Access to formal clinical modules to support knowledge base development
- Interactive learning through weekly tutorials and tasks, fortnightly case studies, and small cohort group support
- Access to 1:1 mentoring from an Accredited Hand Therapist, provided remotely to complement the hands-on learning at GV Health
- Face to face induction to the fellowship
- One year Associate Membership subscription with the AHTA
Who is eligible?
- Grade 2 or 3 Physiotherapists or Occupational Therapists with (ideally) a minimum of 5-years clinical experience,
- Have demonstrated interest and knowledge in hand therapy,
- Hold a current AHPRA registration in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy, and
- Can commit to the expected learning clinical workload and mentoring requirements.

About the role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and team centred Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist to join our health service, in a full-time, fixed term Hand Therapist position until December 2026 (parental leave cover). The role is responsible for the ongoing development and provision of hand therapy services, and providing patient centred care in the area of hand therapy. You will be part of the wider Allied Health team and largely work in our outpatient clinics, but may be required to service the inpatient wards including ED if your expertise is required. Our service accepts referrals from all GV Health inpatient and outpatient clinics and also accepts referrals from metropolitan hospitals for the management of post-operative patients.
The Senior Hand Therapist will facilitate the triage, assessment and treatment of patients referred to the Hand Therapy Clinic, and will perform a leadership role in the provision, development and evaluation of evidence-based hand therapy services at GV Health. They will work to achieve maximal operational effectiveness, to develop organisational competencies and guidelines, and supervise appropriate junior occupational therapy and physiotherapy staff undertaking hand therapy interventions, to ensure organisational service needs are met in a timely manner by appropriately skilled staff.
You will report directly to the Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy Manager, and also work collaboratively with senior medical staff including Orthopaedics. You will work with other seniors in your relevant discipline and senior outpatient allied health staff to ensure effective teamwork and effective consumer care. Mandatory requirements include:
- Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a physiotherapist or occupational therapist
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy
About you:
- Extensive clinical experience and expert knowledge regarding evidence-based hand therapy service provision
- Sound understanding of contemporary professional practice in hand therapy, including person-centred care, optimising patient outcomes and safe clinical practice
- Robust understanding of the clinical supervision process and experience in the provision of mentoring, coaching, and supervision of clinicians, including more junior Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy staff and students
- Demonstrated skills and experience in the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate clinical outcomes and monitor service delivery including relevant KPIs
- Experience in developing competencies, procedures and guidelines for the ongoing development of the hand therapy clinic
- Proven ability to effectively manage and negotiate innovative solutions to complex problems
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise with a wide range of internal and external providers at all levels
Other desirable experience:
- Minimum 5 years clinical experience as a physiotherapist or occupational therapist in relevant healthcare settings
- Relevant post graduate study in Hand Therapy Practice (or working towards)
- Membership of relevant associations such as Australian Hand Therapy Association, Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA) or Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA)
- Previous participation in clinical research activities
- Proficiency in a language other than English
