Position Overview
The Coffs Harbour Health Campus, part of the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD), is seeking applications for the role of Consultant Anaesthetist. This position can be filled either as a Staff Specialist or a Visiting Medical Officer, with remuneration offered in line with the NSW Health Award or Sessional VMO Determination. The number of hours worked per week is negotiable, and there are multiple positions on offer.
About the Anaesthetic Department

The department comprises 15 Visiting Medical Officers, a Provisional Fellow, and 7 Vocational Anaesthetic trainees. The hospital is experiencing rapid growth and is located in a beautiful coastal region.
Hospital Facilities and Services
The recently redeveloped Level 5 Regional Referral Hospital serves a local community of 70,000 people and a broader catchment of over 200,000. Facilities include 10 operating theatres, a hybrid interventional operating theatre, a cardiac catheterisation lab, a radiology interventional suite, an intensive care unit, a cancer institute, and a rural clinical school in partnership with the University of NSW. The anaesthetic team manages a diverse caseload and provides 24-hour emergency surgical services across a broad spectrum of specialties, such as orthopaedics, ear, nose and throat, paediatrics, dental, urology, vascular, obstetrics and gynaecology, general surgery, ERCP, interventional gastroenterology, MRI, and ECT.

Your Clinical Role
- Provide comprehensive anaesthetic care across the hospital’s surgical specialties, including the preadmission clinic, acute pain service, and birthing suite.
- Offer support and education to vocational and non-vocational trainees, medical students, and clinicians across multiple disciplines to ensure quality learning and safe clinical practice.
- Participate in both clinical and non-clinical support roles, including stream leads, with additional remuneration available for interested individuals.
Eligibility Criteria
Registration with AHPRA as a medical practitioner.
Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or working towards FANZCA through training or SIMG pathways.
Recent experience in anaesthesia across a variety of specialties, including trauma, obstetrics, and paediatrics.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and to provide team leadership.
Strong communication skills with patients, colleagues, and staff.
Ability to participate in the on-call roster and respond on-site within a reasonable timeframe.
Current NSW Working with Children Check and National Police Check.
Up-to-date CPD credentialling.
Provisional fellows set to complete FANZCA in the 2026 or 2027 clinical years are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants in this category will not commence their appointment until all qualifications and requirements are formally completed. Applications from SIMGs deemed substantially comparable by ANZCA and on a pathway to FANZCA may also be considered.
