About the Opportunity
Maitland Hospital Operating Theatres are part of the Lower Hunter Sector of Hunter New England Local Health District, supporting a growing community and providing a broad range of surgical services across a busy tertiary healthcare environment. Our perioperative service comprises six fully equipped operating theatres and a dedicated Endoscopy theatre, delivering procedures across General Surgery, Endoscopy, ENT, Paediatrics, Urology, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Orthopaedics and Trauma. Operating seven days a week with 24-hour emergency theatre access, Maitland offers a dynamic environment where no two days are the same. You’ll have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of procedures while developing and strengthening your perioperative expertise.
We are seeking experienced Registered Nurses with Anaesthetic and Scrub/Scout experience to join our supportive and collaborative team. You’ll be supported from day one with a structured orientation program, guidance from our Clinical Nurse Educator and ongoing support through our mentoring program. What You Will Be Doing
As a Perioperative Registered Nurse, you will provide safe, evidence-based and patient-centred care across the surgical journey, with a strong focus on Anaesthetic and Scrub/Scout nursing.
Anaesthetic Nursing
You will:
- Prepare the operating theatre and equipment for anaesthetic procedures.
- Assist the anaesthetist with the safe delivery of anaesthesia.
- Undertake comprehensive patient assessment and monitoring throughout the anaesthetic phase.
- Maintain patient safety and respond promptly to changes in the patient's condition.
- Ensure appropriate preparation, checking and availability of anaesthetic equipment and resources.
- Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to support safe and efficient theatre workflow.
Previous Anaesthetic nursing experience is essential.
Scrub/Scout Nursing
You will:
- Provide safe and effective Scrub/Scout nursing care across a broad range of surgical procedures.
- Prepare and maintain the sterile field and ensure appropriate instruments and equipment are available.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team throughout procedures.
- Maintain strict adherence to infection prevention and control principles.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment and procedures.
- Contribute to safe and efficient theatre flow.
Previous Scrub/Scout experience is essential, with a strong focus on Orthopaedic surgery highly desirable.
Across the role, you will contribute to:
- High-quality, evidence-based perioperative care.
- Effective communication and teamwork across the multidisciplinary team.
- Accurate clinical documentation and handover.
- Patient safety, clinical governance and quality improvement.
- Weekly dedicated CME and education sessions for perioperative staff.
About You
We’re looking for experienced and motivated Registered Nurses who are passionate about perioperative nursing and thrive in a busy, collaborative environment.
Our ideal candidate will:
- Have recent and demonstrated Anaesthetic and Scrub/Scout experience.
- Have strong clinical knowledge and sound clinical judgement.
- Bring experience in Orthopaedic Scrub/Scout nursing, which will be highly regarded.
- Demonstrate confidence working in a fast-paced perioperative environment.
- Communicate effectively with surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff and the broader multidisciplinary team.
- Be organised, adaptable and able to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to patient safety and evidence-based practice.
- Contribute positively to team culture and support colleagues through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
- Be committed to ongoing professional development and maintaining contemporary perioperative practice.
Essential Requirements
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA.
- Demonstrated recent Anaesthetic nursing experience.
- Demonstrated recent Scrub/Scout nursing experience.
- Demonstrated ability to provide safe, high-quality perioperative care.
- Strong communication, teamwork and clinical decision-making skills.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice, patient safety and continuous improvement.
- Ability to participate in the perioperative roster, including weekend and emergency requirements.
