Details: Are you passionate about animal care and supporting student success? Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Technical Officer to join the Science Department. The successful candidate will be a motivated and proactive team member with strong communication skills, capable of supporting teaching staff, students, and animal-based learning activities while maintaining high standards of animal welfare and compliance.
Technical Officer will be required to:

Prepare and support animal classes in collaboration with teaching and support staff across the department.

Assist with student demonstrations, supervise practical classes, and support students with access plans and complex learning needs.

Care for, handle, and manage teaching animals (dogs, cats, fish, and chickens) to support program delivery and training requirements.

Maintain animal welfare and compliance with legislation, Animal Ethics Committee requirements, and relevant codes of practice.

Ensure Workplace Health and Safety standards through safe animal handling, hazard management, equipment maintenance, and housekeeping.

Manage resources, consumables, stock control, purchasing, and the upkeep of animal housing and workspaces to maintain safe and hygienic environments.

Maintain accurate records using CIT systems and communicate effectively with staff, students, and stakeholders while managing competing priorities and compliance obligations.

Complete ad hoc tasks as directed by the Head of Department to support teaching and learning activities across the department.

Eligibility/Other requirements: Qualification in animal studies and/or relevant experience appropriate to the duties of the position.
Notes: This is a temporary position commencing August 2026 for a period of three months with the possibility of extension and/or permanency. This position is part-time at 29.40 hours per week, and the full-time salary noted above will be pro-rata. A Merit Pool may be established from this selection process and used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
