Primary objective
As an experienced practitioner, provide culturally safe and responsive health care service through the provision of treatment of
illness, promoting holistic health and wellbeing within Forensic Mental Health Service to individuals and families within the
professional practice standards and capabilities.
Context statement
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner classification level AHP3 is a practitioner with clinical experience that allows the occupant to
operate with a level of independence against a specific set of rules and procedures set by the health service provider. This level is
also considered appropriate for experienced practitioners re-entering the clinical workforce and requiring upskilling and recency
of practice. Note holistic health care services encompass the physical, mental, social and emotional, environmental and spiritual
health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities. Note this position will be located within
the Forensic Mental Health unit based in Tamarind Centre and Prison
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide timely, clinically and culturally safe holistic health care practice to individuals and families in accordance with their
healthcare plans ensuring continuity of care across the healthcare continuum.
2. Actively engage with local community members to strengthen community involvement in health service delivery.
3. In partnership with other health professionals provide health education and promotion programs in the community.
4. Provide mentoring and support to new graduates and trainees including local workplace induction and orientation.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current registration with Ahpra as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.
2. Minimum AQF level 4 as per NTPS Aboriginal Health Practitioner 2025-2029 Enterprise Agreement or be able to
demonstrate sufficient sustained experience and practice to satisfy the CEO they should be appointed to that level.
3. Proven minimum 2 years’ experience employed as a registered Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner
delivering health care services in a culturally and clinically safe manner.
4. Demonstrated understanding of compliance with the legislation, regulatory frameworks, policies and procedures that apply to
own work.
5. Demonstrated local Aboriginal knowledge with the ability to engage and effectively communicate with individuals and their
families, ensuring informed consent and maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
