The Aboriginal Care Coordinator will perform a liaison role by supporting, guiding, and referring Aboriginal clients, family members and carers to access timely and appropriate ISLHD services for cancer prevention and management. The position aims to improve access, equity, and health care for Aboriginal people with cancer, promoting patient centred care and a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, facilitating an approach in 'closing the gap' between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cancer outcomes. A large component of the role is to ensure care coordination for each person is informed by factors such as connection to land, gender, kinship, inter-generational trauma, family ties, language barriers and socio-economic issues.

Wollongong Hospital is the Illawarra Shoalhaven’s major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed-base count of more than 500. The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.

This is a temporarily funded position until 30 June 2028 with the possibility of an extension subject to funding.
