Nepean Hospital is an important referral and teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. It serves the local areas of Penrith, Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains (comprising a population of 300,000 and growing) and accepts patients from as far as Lithgow and Bathurst flown in by helicopter retrieval services. Nepean Hospital is the Regional Trauma Centre for these areas. ICU positions are accredited with the CICM (ANZ), RACP, ANZCA, and ACEM for Intensive Care Training. Fellows are encouraged to prepare for appropriate exams.
The role of the Intensive Care Unit is to provide Intensive Care services to the community as well as providing emergency response to all wards within the hospital.

What you'll be doing

Participate in an on call roster at a senior level on the fellow roster.

Undertake duties in the Echocardiography laboratory, including: performing studies (both TTE and TOE), Q&A activities, and preparation for echo exams and educational meetings.

This program includes a training in transthoracic and trans-oesophageal echocardiography undertaken in conjunction with duties in the ICU.

Participate in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered to days, evening or night shifts across a seven day roster.

Act as role model and promote a culture and supporting practices that reflect the organisational values through demonstrated behaviours and interactions with patients/clients/employees.

Working on a roster that is approximately 60% clinical and 40% non-clinical (echo).

24 bed unit.

Workforce includes: 10 Staff Specialists, 1 Echo Fellow, 1 Professorial fellow (involved in research / education / other), 1 ARTIC fellow (involved in education, simulation, management of outreach / MET service), 1 Provisional Fellows (typically undertaking fellowship exams), 11 trainee registrars, 4 Senior Medical Resident Officers and 4 Residents.

Essential requirements

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.

Completion or near completion of all CICM requirements for entry into the Transitional Year, including expected completion of all CICM exams by commencement of employment.

Enrolled in an Advanced Critical Care Echocardiography certification program. If this program is the DDU with Australasian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) then ideally completion of the first part of the examination process (physics exam).

Clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role including experience in critical care disciplines of anaesthesia, emergency medicine, and/or intensive care.

This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent's registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.

Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.

To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
Selection criteria

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.

Completion or near completion of the CICM specialist qualification.

Prior interest and commitment to learning critical care ultrasound.

Enrolled in an Advanced Critical Care Echocardiography certification program.

Demonstrate an interest in continuing to use critical care echocardiography as a future part of being an ICU specialist.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
-
Demonstrated interest in trainee welfare and support.
