Love food. Love pace. Love systems that make life easier.
Café 0.6 is looking for an experienced Chef / Kitchen Manager to lead our kitchen, keep standards sharp, and help us level up menus, systems and service. If you’re consistent, organised, and you take pride in a smooth, happy kitchen — keep reading.
The vibe
We’re a busy café with loyal regulars, strong weekdays, big weekends, and growing catering/functions. We care about:
- food that’s consistent (even when it’s slammed)
- a clean, organised kitchen
- menus that sell (not just look pretty)
- systems that make everyone’s life easier
- a team culture that’s direct, respectful and no-drama
The role
This is a full-time position. You’ll start with flexible days, moving into a stable Monday–Friday roster once the kitchen is settled and running smoothly.
You’ll work closely with our Store Manager day-to-day to keep FOH + BOH aligned — service, pacing, communication and customer experience. You’ll also collaborate with our Operations Manager on systems, menu development and performance targets.
In short: you won’t be doing this solo — you’ll be part of the leadership team, working together to keep standards high and the business moving forward.
What you’ll be responsible for
You’ll lead the kitchen across (but not limited to):
- Breakfast / lunch / brunch
- Pastries & desserts
- Catering + functions
- Menu development & seasonal updates
What you’ll do day-to-day
- Run service with quality + speed
- Maintain cleanliness and equipment standards (the 0.6 way)
- Own stock control: ordering, receiving, checking invoices vs deliveries
- Reduce waste and tighten portion control
- Manage suppliers (quality, pricing, reliability)
- Work with the Store Manager to manage customer feedback + service improvements
- Improve workflow + production layout (make it smarter, not harder)
- Work to KPI targets and submit a simple Kitchen Management Report
- Build costing systems: standard recipes, COGS, labour planning
- Recruit, train and develop kitchen staff when required
- Execute new menu items with clear prep + purchasing standards
- Communicate clearly with the team so standards don’t drop when it’s busy or when key people are off
- Build and maintain systems (checklists, prep sheets, par levels, recipe standards) so the kitchen runs smoothly and consistently
You MUST have
- 4+ years café kitchen experience (Chef / Sous / KM level)
- Strong leadership + calm under pressure
- Great organisation (prep plans, systems, consistency)
- Ability to build menus that work for weekday + weekend trade
- Full Australian working rights (no working holiday visa)
- A “leave it better than you found it” mindset
- You must love systems — you’ll enjoy tightening processes, setting standards, and making the kitchen easier to run
Bonus points (not essential)
- AI-curious / tech-friendly — if you use tools to streamline planning, admin, costing, training or documentation, that’s a big plus. We’re into anything that makes life easier and helps the team win.
