Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is the major health provider in the Central Hume region. NHW has recently completed a major redevelopment, including the building of a new emergency department, ICU, and expansion of medical and paediatric units.
NHW is a growing regional service with 255 beds and is the major referral facility for the greater part of Northeast Victoria. Our Emergency Department sees >32,000 presentations per year. We have a varied case mix including trauma and approximately 25% of our presentations are paediatrics. The Emergency term is accredited for the paediatric logbook for ACEM trainees.
The Emergency Department is supported by a broad range of inpatient specialties including Internal Medicine, Critical Care Unit (including ICU, HDU and CCU beds), General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Geriatrics/Rehabilitation, Medical Oncology, and Mental Health services.
There is a strong emphasis on education in our department. We are involved in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education as well as nursing and allied health education. University of Melbourne’s popular rural clinical school is located onsite, with education facilities that include a simulation lab and skills centre that are utilised in our registrar education program.
Our Senior Medical Staff comprises consultants from FACEM, FACRRM and FRACGP backgrounds.
