We are looking for a hands-on Electronics Technician to support the assembly, testing, repair and deployment of the GPS tracking, timing and weather equipment used across our racing operations. Based in our Frenchs Forest workshop, the role is split between preparing equipment for race meetings and providing on-course technical support at Sydney race venues. Typically, around half the week is spent in the workshop and half supporting live race day operations.
This position is well suited to a recently qualified Certificate III or IV Electronics graduate, or an apprentice nearing completion, who enjoys practical technical work and wants to build real-world experience with GPS, telemetry and live event technology.
On-Course Support (Race Days)
-
Attend Sydney race meetings (primarily Randwick and Rosehill) as the on-site technician for timing, tracking and weather equipment.
-
Set up, monitor and pack down GPS tracking, timing and weather hardware on race day.
-
Carry out pre-race checks: battery condition and voltage, tag function, connectivity, sensor and weather station status.
-
Diagnose and resolve hardware issues on-course during a meeting, with calm and care under live event pressure.
-
Support the race day operators where hardware or equipment is involved.
-
Follow site safety procedures and maintain clear service records for each meeting.
Equipment Assembly, Testing & Repair (Primary)
-
Assemble GPS tags and other on-course electronic equipment in the Frenchs Forest workshop, including soldering, component fitting and final build.
-
Test assembled equipment using our Windows-based configuration and testing applications.
-
Diagnose faulty units: battery replacement, low-voltage electronics, cabling, connectors and housings.
-
Solder, rework and use hand and basic power tools (soldering iron, multimeter, drills, drivers) safely and accurately.
-
Keep the workshop and tools tidy, organised and ready for the next build or repair run.
Equipment Preparation & Logistics
-
Prepare equipment kits for upcoming race meetings: charging, configuring, packing and labelling.
-
Manage stock of tags, batteries, cables and consumables; flag low stock to the team.
-
Help maintain storage areas so equipment is easy to find, easy to track and ready to deploy.
-
Support occasional maintenance visits to Sydney racecourses (within roughly two hours of Frenchs Forest) using the company vehicle.
Skills - Essential
-
Certificate III or IV in Electronics and Communications (or a related electronics qualification, TAFE or equivalent), or an apprentice nearing completion. Equivalent hands-on experience in electronics assembly, soldering and repair will also be considered.
-
Comfortable using hand tools and basic power tools (drills, drivers, multimeters).
-
Confident working with low-voltage electronics and batteries (typically 12V and 24V; no high-voltage / mains work in this role).
-
Comfortable using Windows-based software applications to configure and test equipment.
-
Methodical, careful approach to testing, repair and documentation.
-
Calm and professional in live event environments.
-
Available Tuesday to Saturday. Sydney metropolitan race meetings are generally held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so on-course availability on those days is essential, with flexibility for early starts, late finishes and the occasional public holiday around race meetings.
-
Valid Australian driver's licence and ability to drive a company vehicle to Sydney racecourses.
-
Reasonable physical ability, lifting and carrying equipment, working outdoors at racecourses in varied weather.
Skills - Nice to Have
-
Experience with GPS, RF, telemetry or wireless devices.
-
Soldering and small-scale electronics rework (component-level assembly and repair).
-
Experience supporting live events, sports timing or broadcast environments.
-
Elevated Work Platform (EWP) ticket or Work Safely at Heights certification.
-
Basic networking awareness (routers, switches, cabling).
-
Previous experience in racing or another live operational industry.
