What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a Residential Product Engineer – Grid Services to join our Residential Service Engineering team in Australia. This role is critical to ensuring Tesla meets its grid service performance commitments at scale in one of the world’s most dynamic residential energy storage and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) markets. You will use fleet data, engineering fundamentals, and cross functional collaboration to monitor performance, resolve issues, and drive improvements across firmware, software, and operational teams. This position serves as the primary technical liaison between Australian energy partners and Tesla’s global engineering organisation. This role is open to applicants based in Adelaide, Melbourne, or Sydney.
What You'll Do-
Own the serviceability of new grid service features end-to-end, from service handover through ongoing diagnostics and resolution

Investigate complex product and system issues using first-principles analysis to identify root causes and drive firmware, software, and hardware solutions

Define, track, and report on grid service KPIs including dispatch accuracy, VPP participation rates, and regulatory compliance

Query large scale fleet telemetry using SQL and Python (NumPy, Pandas or similar) to identify systemic issues and drive continuous improvement

Develop and maintain dashboards and automated alerts for proactive fleet monitoring at scale

Represent Tesla in technical discussions with VPP operators, energy retailers, and grid operators, providing clear status updates and technical findings

Collaborate with firmware, software, data, and field operations teams to implement and validate corrective actions

Leverage AI-powered tools to accelerate data analysis, code generation, diagnostic reasoning, and documentation
What You'll Bring-
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline

Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in an engineering or technical role

Strong engineering fundamentals applied to firmware/software-enabled systems with the ability to reason across hardware, firmware, and cloud layers

Demonstrated experience using SQL and Python for data analysis

Excellent problem solving skills with a methodical approach to root cause analysis on complex, distributed systems

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical documentation and engage with external partners

Preferred: Experience with grid tied energy systems, Australian energy markets, or VPP programs

Preferred: Demonstrated experience using AI/LLM tools (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate engineering workflows
