Disability Support Worker – Creative & Practical Focus (Thornleigh)
Australian Support Workers Sydney is seeking a reliable, hands-on Support Worker for an immediate start in Thornleigh. We are looking for someone who can build a genuine connection with a young boy who has an ASD2 and PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) profile.
About the Role
This isn’t just a standard support role; it’s about engagement through activity. Our client is a keen builder and creator. He has already collaborated with workers to build a table and a lamp, and he is eager to dive into more woodwork and crafting projects.
We are looking for a male support worker (preferred) who can bring practical handywork skills to the table. If you enjoy DIY, tinkering in a shed, or working with tools, you will be a great fit.
The Ideal Candidate
- Handy & Creative: Practical skills in woodwork or general "maker" hobbies to assist with ongoing projects.
- PDA Savvy: An understanding of Pathological Demand Avoidance—knowing how to collaborate and provide autonomy rather than using a high-demand approach.
- Flexible & Reliable: Able to lock in Morning and Evening shifts around school hours. Typically 7am-9am and then 3pm-6pm. Weekend Support also sought after.
- Proactive: Someone who can engage the client through shared interests, especially when he feels disengaged.
- Disability Experience needed + other skills bonus: Our client is looking for someone that has the right disability experience, has an understanding of how to communicate with neurodivergent children and strategies to use to engage him. Someone that has worked with someone with PDA profile, or is able to feel confident to be trained and provide appropriate language techniques is a must.
- The boy is still at school (young teenager) so a Male worker under 30 years old is preferred, but not strictly a hiring condition.
Requirements
- Minimum 2+ year experience in disability support.
- Understanding of neurodivergent communication strategies and techniques
- Woodwork skills and interests would be preferred - a trades skill would be highly regarded
- Experience implementing Behaviour Support Plans with a calm, flexible approach.
- All mandatory NDIS worker requirements (Police Check, NDIS Worker Screening).
- Background in psychology/ social work, counselling or behaviour support is highly regarded.
Why Join Us?
- High pay rates for the right skills and commitment.
- A supportive team that understands complex profiles.
- The chance to work on tangible projects and see the direct impact of your mentorship.
