About the Role
Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Retail Manager holds full accountability for the day-to-day management of the store across all departments including grocery, fresh produce, deli, bakery, and front-end checkout. This is a permanent full-time position offering a salary of $75,000 – $85,000 per annum plus superannuation.
Visa sponsorship (Subclass 482 TSS) is available for suitably qualified overseas candidates.
Your Responsibilities
- Manage all daily store operations across every department
- Own the store budget including labour, wastage, shrinkage, and overheads
- Analyse and implement strategies to achieve sales and margin targets
- Lead, recruit, train, roster, and performance manage a team of 20+ employees
- Ensure compliance with the General Retail Industry Award 2020 and Fair Work Act 2009
- Oversee inventory ordering, stock control, supplier negotiations, and loss prevention
- Execute IGA promotional programmes and ensure planogram compliance
- Champion customer service standards and resolve escalated complaints
- Maintain compliance with Work Health and Safety legislation and HACCP food safety standards
- Build and maintain positive relationships within the Carnarvon community
Fresh Produce Department — Direct Accountability
In addition to overall store management, the Retail Manager holds direct personal accountability for the Fresh Produce department. This includes:
- Hands-on management of all fresh produce ordering, purchasing, and supplier relationships
- Setting and maintaining produce display standards including presentation, rotation, and replenishment
- Managing produce shrinkage, waste, and markdowns to maximise department profitability
- Ensuring full compliance with food safety and temperature control requirements for all fresh produce
- Monitoring market pricing and adjusting buying strategies to remain competitive
- Seasonal range planning and promotional execution for the produce department
- Direct supervision and training of produce team members
Bakery Department — Direct Accountability
The Retail Manager also holds direct personal accountability for the Bakery department. IGA Fresh Carnarvon operates a retail bakery selling a range of ready-made products sourced from external suppliers. This includes:
- Managing all bakery product ordering and maintaining strong relationships with bakery suppliers
- Curating and reviewing the product range to meet customer demand and seasonal trends
- Maintaining bakery display presentation, merchandising, and product rotation standards
- Managing stock levels to minimise wastage and markdowns while avoiding out-of-stocks
- Ensuring all products meet food safety, labelling, and temperature storage requirements
- Monitoring sales performance and adjusting ordering and ranging decisions accordingly
What You Will Need
- Minimum retail management experience in a supermarket or grocery environment
- Strong knowledge of inventory management, stock control, and loss prevention
- Hands-on experience managing a fresh produce or perishables department
- Experience managing a retail bakery or similar ready-made food department
- Thorough understanding food safety requirements
- Proficiency in retail POS and inventory management systems
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills
- Flexibility to work retail hours including weekends and public holidays
- Strong leadership skills with an ability to connect positively with both customers and team
- A happy, friendly and energetic personality
- A desire to deliver high quality customer service
- A current/valid police check or a willingness to obtain if successful
Desirable
- Diploma of Leadership/Management, Retail Management, or a related field
- Experience within the IGA or Metcash network
