This is an opportunity to use the knowledge you've built throughout your automotive career in a specialist, office-based role, providing remote diagnostic and technical support to technicians across Australia.
You'll work across a broad range of makes, models and technologies, using OEM diagnostic platforms, technical information and your own experience to help solve complex faults, guide repair decisions and support technicians when they need expert assistance.
You'll stay connected to the technical side of the automotive industry without spending every day on the tools.
Why Join SMART AVR?

Expand your knowledge across diagnostics, vehicle electronics, programming and ADAS
-
Access ongoing training and professional development
-
Become part of a national automotive technical support team

About the Role
As a Remote Diagnostic Technician, you'll provide technical guidance and diagnostic support to technicians across our national network.
Using OEM diagnostic software, wiring diagrams, repair information, technical service bulletins and manufacturer resources, you'll help technicians identify faults, determine the right diagnostic pathway and reach accurate repair solutions.
Some enquiries may be resolved quickly. Others will require you to dig deeper, interpreting fault codes, reviewing electrical systems and communication networks, researching manufacturer information and working methodically with the technician to get to the root cause.
You'll become an important part of SMART AVR's technical support capability, helping our frontline teams diagnose vehicles efficiently, reduce unnecessary parts replacement and deliver the right repair outcome.
Key Responsibilities
-
Provide remote diagnostic and technical support via phone, video, remote desktop platforms and written communication
-
Diagnose and research complex vehicle faults across multiple makes and models
-
Interpret fault codes, electrical issues, network communication faults and vehicle system failures
-
Utilise OEM diagnostic software, wiring diagrams, repair manuals, manufacturer portals and technical service bulletins
-
Guide technicians through logical diagnostic processes and repair procedures
-
Support the installation, configuration and troubleshooting of diagnostic software and equipment
-
Assist with ADAS diagnostics, programming and calibration enquiries
-
Research unfamiliar or emerging technical issues and identify practical solutions
-
Stay current with evolving vehicle technologies, electronic systems and manufacturer updates
-
Manage multiple technical support requests while maintaining a high standard of service
-
Share technical knowledge and contribute to internal resources, procedures and best-practice documentation
-
Help build the diagnostic capability and confidence of technicians across our network
About You
You're the person other technicians come to when a fault doesn't make sense.
You enjoy the challenge of working through difficult diagnostic problems, understanding why something has failed rather than simply replacing parts until the problem disappears.
You've built strong technical knowledge through years of hands-on experience, but you're also comfortable admitting when you don't immediately know the answer. More importantly, you know how to find it. You're confident researching technical information, navigating manufacturer systems, interpreting wiring diagrams and using diagnostic data to work logically towards a solution.
Technology doesn't intimidate you. You're comfortable moving between scan tools, OEM platforms, technical databases, remote support software and different vehicle systems and you're genuinely interested in where automotive technology is heading.
Just as importantly, you can communicate.
You understand that being technically knowledgeable is only part of the role. You'll be supporting technicians with different levels of experience, so you need the patience and communication skills to ask the right questions, explain complex information clearly and guide someone through a diagnostic process remotely.
You'll be someone who:
-
Naturally approaches problems in a logical and methodical way
-
Enjoys tackling the difficult faults that require deeper investigation
-
Can separate symptoms from root causes and avoid assumptions
-
Is confident making technical decisions based on evidence and diagnostic data
-
Communicates clearly and professionally with technicians and other stakeholders
-
Enjoys sharing knowledge and helping other technicians improve
-
Is comfortable working independently while contributing to a collaborative technical team
-
Can prioritise multiple enquiries without losing attention to detail
-
Takes ownership of problems and follows them through to a practical resolution
-
Is curious about new vehicle technology and committed to continually developing their knowledge
-
Wants to build a long-term career in automotive diagnostics and technical support
Ultimately, we're looking for someone with strong technical capability, curiosity and the right mindset. You don't need to know everything but you need to be someone who won't stop at the first answer when a problem requires deeper investigation.
Essential Experience
-
Trade qualification as an Automotive Technician, Diagnostic Technician or Auto Electrician
-
Minimum 5 years' post-trade experience
-
Strong experience diagnosing faults across multiple vehicle makes and models
-
Sound understanding of vehicle electronics, control modules, communication networks and fault-code interpretation
-
Experience using OEM diagnostic tooling and software
-
Confidence navigating manufacturer portals and technical information systems
-
Strong computer and general technology skills
-
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-
Ability to explain complex technical information clearly and practically
-
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
-
Self-motivated approach with a genuine interest in continuous learning and emerging automotive technology
Highly Regarded
Experience in any of the following would be highly regarded:
-
Automotive technical support, helpdesk, field support or technical advisory roles
-
Advanced diagnostic training or specialist diagnostic certifications
-
Auto Electrical qualifications
-
ADAS diagnostics and calibration
-
Remote diagnostic or technical support platforms
-
Mentoring, coaching or training technicians
-
Advanced electrical and network diagnostics
What's It Like Working Here?
This isn't your typical workshop role.
Instead of working on the same vehicles or repairs every day, you'll be exposed to technical challenges from across a national network.
One enquiry might involve an electrical fault that has already defeated several technicians. The next could involve an OEM programming issue, an ADAS system, a communication network fault or a vehicle technology you've never encountered before.
That's what makes the role interesting.
You'll work alongside experienced automotive and diagnostic professionals, share knowledge across the team and continue building your expertise as vehicle technology evolves.
It's an opportunity to take everything you've learned on the tools and apply it in a different way solving problems, supporting technicians and becoming a trusted technical resource across the business.
If you're passionate about diagnostics, enjoy helping others and like being the person people turn to when they need an answer, we'd like to hear from you.
