Primary objective
Provide clinical services to patients of Mental Health Services Central Australia Region as a Royal Australian and New Zealand
College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Trainee.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Under the supervision of a psychiatrist assess, manage, and treat clients presenting to Mental Health Services Central Australia
and Barkly Region according to clinical guidelines, best practice, and a recovery-oriented approach.
2. Fulfil statutory requirements under the Mental Health and Related Services Act and ensure that Northern Territory Legislation is
accurately interpreted, implemented and that the necessary documentation is promptly and comprehensively completed.
3. Participate in after-hours on call roster and attend daytime crisis calls in designated area of clinical responsibility and as directed.
4. Provide supervision and training to junior medical staff, medical students, and other clinical staff as appropriate.
5. Participate in research, educational and professional development.
6. Contribute to and participate in continuous quality improvement activities and adhere to relevant work health and safety
policies in line with the National Mental Health Strategy and the National Safety and Quality Healthcare Standards.
7. Practice in accordance with Mental Health Services Central Australia Region, philosophies, policies, procedures, and standards;
this includes establishing and maintaining appropriate client records and complying with management information system and
ABF requirements.
8. Participate fully in the RANZCP Psychiatric Training Program.
9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
2. Eligible for registration as a trainee with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
3. An understanding of the role and function of inpatient and ambulatory multidisciplinary mental health services.
4. Proven skills in the effective use of information technology records and systems maintenance for the effective delivery of client
services.
5. Current Northern Territory drivers’ licence or ability to obtain prior to commencement.
6. An ability to interact effectively and respectfully with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Desirable
1. Awareness and understanding of the Australian Council of Health Care Standards for Mental Health and contemporary mental
health issues.
2. Previous experience in mental health.
3. Experience in teaching of junior medical staff and other professionals.
