About the Role
As a Service Engineer, you will play a key role in improving the reliability and performance of SCT's locomotive fleet. Working closely with Quality and Reliability Engineers and Maintenance Operations teams, you will provide technical leadership, investigate complex equipment failures and develop practical engineering solutions that improve fleet availability and operational performance.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys combining hands-on rail experience with engineering principles to deliver lasting improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with Reliability Engineers to identify and implement reliability improvement initiatives across the locomotive fleet.
- Provide technical support and act as the primary engineering escalation point for complex locomotive faults.
- Investigate equipment failures using structured root cause analysis and develop effective corrective actions.
- Prepare technical reports, engineering recommendations and maintenance instructions.
- Support engineering change management by reviewing, validating and implementing maintenance and engineering improvements.
- Monitor asset performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, safety and maintenance efficiency.
- Mentor and support maintenance technicians by sharing technical knowledge and developing engineering capability.
- Assist with planning major maintenance activities, shutdowns and engineering projects.
- Work collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance and external suppliers to resolve technical issues.
- Work with the Quality Engineer to improve the Quality Management System. Provide support with routine audits (internal, external supplier and Rail Regulator audits).
- Coordinate rail maintenance and engineering teams, during afternoon and weekend shift work.
- Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring engineering activities comply with rail safety legislation, company standards and best practice.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A recognised Mechanical, Electrical or Engineering qualification (or equivalent trade qualification with significant rail engineering experience).
- Demonstrated experience in locomotive, rollingstock or heavy mobile equipment maintenance.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Experience undertaking root cause analysis and implementing reliability improvements.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels.
- A collaborative approach and passion for mentoring others.
- Knowledge of maintenance management systems (SAP or similar is desirable).
- A commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.
- Being able to work rotational shifts (Morning-Afternoon-Weekends)
