The Senior Project Accountant is responsible for controlling and managing the financial and accounting practices, systems, and reporting for assigned projects and/or the wider organisation, with a strong emphasis on hands‑on project delivery experience.
The role requires someone who has previously worked on complex projects and partnered closely with project teams and engineers, translating technical scope, progress, and risk into clear financial insight.
The Senior Project Accountant provides accurate, timely financial analysis and reporting to support senior leadership in making informed commercial decisions, improving project outcomes, and enhancing overall profitability.
Responsibilities will include:
Lead, direct and review the analysis and interpretation of financial, statistical and accounting information to support effective management decision-making.
Compile, review and analyse monthly project financial reports and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Review and analyse operating results against budgets, forecasts and operating policies, including consolidation of capital asset, maintenance and operating budgets.
Contribute to the development of short- and long-term financial policies, objectives and plans, and oversee the implementation of agreed financial strategies.
Prepare financial schedules and reports in accordance with internal management and statutory reporting requirements.
Ensure major capital expenditure requests comply with approved budgets and delegated authority frameworks.
Maintain regular reviews of income, expenditure and cash flow to ensure future business requirements are met.Monitor outstanding debtors and support
Project Managers in resolving payment issues.
Audit procurement processes to ensure all requisitions and invoices are appropriately authorised.
Audit project wage employee remuneration, including timesheets, to ensure accuracy and compliance.Interpret operating results to assess the financial position of projects and provide recommendations for cost control and profit improvement.
Compile, review and analyse forecast information to evaluate projected and final financial outcomes for projects.
Liaise with external auditors as required.
Contribute to the selection, development and training of finance staff.
Build and maintain strong internal and external stakeholder relationships through proactive, professional communication.
Perform all duties in accordance with John Holland policies, processes, systems and procedures.
You will need:
Qualifications
CPA or equivalent tertiary accounting qualification
Tertiary qualifications in Business, Commerce, Statistics or a related discipline
Experience
5–10 years’ experience in accounting and/or a similar senior finance role
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels
Highly developed computer skills, including advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
