Position Description – Accounts Payable Officer
February 2026

Purpose

The Accounts Payable Officer will be responsible for the ‘end to end’ processing of invoices
for payment.

The primary objective of this position is to prepare and process invoices for payment that
results in the efficient, accurate and effective payment of Council Suppliers, with due
diligence against the approved invoice authorisation workflow. The Accounts Payable Officer
will work with Suppliers and staff to meet this objective.

This role will provide opportunities in a positive and energetic collaboration together with
other Finance Team Members.

Strong communication skills and ability to maintain solid relationships (with internal and
external) stakeholders will be vital to this role.

As an ongoing commitment to the organisation you will be responsible for delivering the
best service to our community and to improve residents’ quality life; continuously, smartly
and efficiently in the scope of your daily work.

Key Deliverables

Ensuring that correct authorisation is applied in line with Delegated Authority.

Invoice input and payment of Council creditors in accordance with Council's payment

terms.

Checking GST compliance and Chart of Accounts coding.

Promptly respond to creditor and staff enquiries.

Review and reconcile supplier statements and follow up outstanding items.

System addition of all new Suppliers and alterations to existing Suppliers in line with

corporate name, address and bank account requirements.

Working closely with the Finance team to ensure a collaborative and positive

environment.

Person Specification

Essential criteria

Advanced communication skills both written and verbal.

Prior experience in accounts payable or general accounting environment.

Significant experience in the use of accounting software systems and MS Office

Software particularly Excel.

Highly developed accurate data entry skills.

Knowledge of accounting principles and GST legislation relating to Tax Invoices

Self-motivated, working efficiently with minimum supervision and self-assessment of

priorities.

Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.

Carry out all requirements with accuracy and significant attention to detail.

Standard conditions

Satisfactory completion of a National Police Clearance (will be arranged by the City of

Marion)

Satisfactory completion of applicable Medical Assessment (will be arranged by the

City of Marion)

Must be either an Australian resident or possess the legal right to work in Australia,

with the ability to provide documentation of a valid work visa.

Comply with existing Work, Health and Safety legislation and regulation obligations and

apply “Think Safe Live Well” philosophy.

Embrace ethical and moral behavior and report any suspected instances of fraud

and/or corruption in accordance with Fraud and Corruption Management and the
Code of Conduct.
