The Attorney General is seeking applications from qualified persons for appointment as Commissioner of the Land and Environment Court of NSW. Commissioners exercise the jurisdiction of the Court to determine certain of its cases, either by conciliation or hearing on the merits as the Chief Judge may arrange. Commissioners may also be allocated by the Chief Judge to assist a Judge of the Court when the Judge is exercising the jurisdiction of the Court. Commissioners of the Land and Environment Court are appointed full-time for a seven-year term.
Salary: $322,430 per annum plus Conveyance Allowance of $17,955 per annum
Selection criteria for Commissioners: Appointees must have at least one of the qualifications detailed in section 12 of the Land and Environment Court Act 1979. These include special knowledge of and experience (and, in some cases, formal qualifications) in such fields as local government administration, town or country planning, environmental planning, environmental science, arboriculture, environmental assessment, land valuation, architecture, engineering, surveying, building construction, the management of natural resources and Crown land, urban design or heritage, land rights for Aboriginal people, or being an Australian lawyer.
Appointees must hold a current NSW Driver Licence and be willing and capable of driving for the purposes of work.
It is desirable that appointees be, or be qualified to be, accredited as a mediator under the National Mediator Accreditation System. Full-time Commissioners must be willing to obtain such accreditation after appointment if not already qualified.
Appointees to the role of Commissioner must comply with, for the duration of any appointment, the pecuniary interest and conflict of interest provisions in sections 12(2B) and 14(1) of the Land and Environment Court Act 1979.
