Casual Disability Support Worker – SIL & Community Supports
Makodah Care
Makodah Care is currently seeking reliable, compassionate and experienced Casual Disability Support Workers with flexible availability to join our growing team, with opportunities across Supported Independent Living (SIL) and community-based supports.
We are particularly interested in applicants who can offer flexibility across weekday, afternoon, evening, weekend and inactive overnight sleepover shifts.
About Makodah Care
Makodah Care is a disability support provider founded on lived experience.
Our understanding of disability doesn't come solely from policies, qualifications or professional experience. We understand firsthand what it is like to navigate the disability sector as a family, advocate for the right supports and search for people you can genuinely trust to support someone you love.
That lived experience is at the heart of how Makodah Care operates.
We know that quality support is about far more than completing tasks or filling shifts. It's about consistency, trust, genuine relationships and taking the time to understand each person as an individual.
Our approach is simple:
Real People. Real Care. Real Difference.
About the Role
As a Disability Support Worker with Makodah Care, you will provide person centred support to participants within their homes and communities.
Our current recruitment includes opportunities within a Supported Independent Living environment operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are looking for workers who can offer genuine flexibility and reliability across a range of shifts.
Availability may include:
- Weekday daytime shifts
- Afternoon and evening shifts
- Weekend shifts
- Public holidays
- Inactive overnight sleepovers
While flexibility is important, we also strongly value consistency. Wherever possible, we aim to provide regular and predictable rosters so participants can build trusting and genuine relationships with the people who support them.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on the individual needs and goals of each participant, your responsibilities may include:
- Providing person centred support within a Supported Independent Living home.
- Supporting participants with daily routines including personal care and household tasks.
- Encouraging independence and assisting participants to develop everyday living skills.
- Providing community access and social support.
- Supporting participants to attend appointments, activities and community events.
- Assisting with meal preparation and household routines.
- Providing medication support where appropriately trained and authorised.
- Completing clear, accurate and timely shift notes and required documentation.
- Following individual support plans, risk assessments, behaviour support plans and organisational policies and procedures.
- Supporting participant choice, dignity, privacy, independence and control.
- Recognising and reporting changes in a participant's wellbeing, circumstances or support needs.
- Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries while developing genuine and respectful working relationships.
- Working collaboratively with participants, families, support coordinators and the wider Makodah Care team.
Inactive Overnight Sleepovers
Some SIL shifts will include inactive overnight sleepovers.
During an inactive overnight shift, the support worker remains onsite at the participant's home and is available to respond should assistance be required during the night.
Applicants must be comfortable sleeping onsite and able to respond appropriately if a participant requires support overnight.
Sleepover shifts are paid in accordance with the applicable award and employment conditions.
Who We're Looking For
Because of our own lived experience, the people we welcome into our team matter enormously to us.
We ask ourselves a simple question when recruiting:
Would we feel comfortable having this person support someone we love?
We're looking for people who genuinely care about the quality of support they provide. People who are reliable, respectful and understand that good support isn't about taking over—it's about helping people build confidence, maintain independence and live life on their own terms.
The successful candidate will ideally:
- Be reliable, punctual and consistent.
- Have flexible availability across a range of shifts.
- Be available for inactive overnight sleepovers.
- Be comfortable working independently within a SIL environment.
- Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Be patient, respectful and genuinely person-centred.
- Understand the importance of participant choice, dignity, privacy and independence.
- Be confident completing shift documentation and following individual support plans.
- Be able to recognise and appropriately report changes in participant wellbeing or support needs.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a wider team.
- Be committed to building genuine, professional and consistent relationships with participants.
Our Approach to Participant Matching
We don't believe in simply filling shifts with whoever happens to be available.
Our lived experience has shown us how important the relationship between a participant and their support worker can be. That's why we carefully consider personality, interests, communication style, experience and individual support needs when matching workers with participants.
The right match can build trust, confidence and consistency. For us, genuine participant matching isn't just a marketing phrase—it's a fundamental part of how we operate.
