Primary objective
To oversee summary prosecutions conducted in the Katherine Local Court and bush circuit courts in the Northern Territory’s northern region, to
supervise, manage, and provide support to summary prosecutors and other professional staff, and to develop relationships, procedures and
systems with internal and external stakeholders to improve the efficiency and efficacy of summary prosecutions.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage the allocation of prosecutorial work appropriate to the skills and experience of summary prosecutors to ensure appropriate
representation in matters and an equitable distribution of work within the work unit.
2. Supervise, manage and performance-manage professional and administrative staff.
3. Develop and implement strategies for the effective recruitment, development and retention of summary prosecutors to support current and
future needs of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
4. Appear in the Directions Hearings lists as required.
5. Take and maintain carriage of summary prosecutions, including defended hearings, bail applications and sentence hearings before the Local
Court in Katherine, including at times appeals from the Local Court to the Supreme Court.
6. Engage with external stakeholders to develop and implement strategies to continually improve the effectiveness and fairness of summary
prosecutions, including the Local Court, NT Police Force, NT Correctional Services, North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA), NT
Legal Aid Commission, and private legal firms.
7. Provide professional advice, guidance and support to the NT Police Force as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission (or eligible for admission) as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia.
2. High level of advocacy, communication (written and oral) and negotiation skills.
3. Demonstrated capacity to provide leadership in the delivery of professional high-quality services working collaboratively with a range of
internal and external stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
4. Ability to anticipate, plan and manage change and remain positive under pressure.
5. Demonstrated capacity to provide leadership in the development and implementation of strategies to successfully deal with the recruitment,
development and retention of professional staff.
6. Extensive experience in criminal law and advocacy with the ability to provide sound and timely advice.
7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
8. Willingness to undertake remote travel including in light aircraft.
9. Hold (or have the capacity to obtain) current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
Desirable
1. Detailed knowledge of the NT Criminal Code and practices and procedures of the courts of the Northern Territory.
2. Sound understanding of Aboriginal issues relevant to prosecution services.
