Technical Estimator
An established engineering and project delivery business is seeking an experienced Technical Estimator to join its growing pre-sales and commercial team. This role is responsible for developing accurate, commercially sound estimates and tender submissions for industrial engineering, fabrication, construction, and installation projects.
Working closely with engineering, project management, procurement, and operations teams, the Technical Estimator plays a key role in converting technical project opportunities into profitable business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Tendering & Scope Development
- Prepare comprehensive tender and quotation submissions.
- Review and interpret client specifications, drawings, RFQs, and scope documents.
- Identify scope gaps, ambiguities, and commercial risks.
- Develop project methodologies, assumptions, inclusions, and exclusions.
- Coordinate inputs from engineering, procurement, and operations teams.
- Support bid qualification and Go/No-Go decision-making processes.
Estimating & Commercial Pricing
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for engineering, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and construction projects.
- Develop bottom-up estimates using labour, material, subcontractor, and equipment costs.
- Apply commercial margins and risk allowances in accordance with company requirements.
- Develop work breakdown structures, schedules, and pricing models.
- Source and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
Client Engagement
- Participate in client meetings, site visits, workshops, and tender briefings.
- Clarify technical and commercial requirements with clients.
- Support pricing discussions and commercial negotiations.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with engineering, procurement, project delivery, and operations teams.
- Validate technical assumptions and project methodologies.
- Confirm resource availability and delivery capabilities before submission.
- Contribute to integrated project solutions across multiple disciplines.
Project Handover & Continuous Improvement
- Support handover of awarded projects to delivery teams.
- Participate in estimate-to-actual cost reviews.
- Maintain estimating templates, cost databases, and pricing libraries.
- Contribute to process improvements and lessons learned initiatives.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Minimum 5 years' experience in estimating within engineering, fabrication, construction, industrial services, or related sectors.
- Technical background through a trade qualification, engineering degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience preparing detailed estimates from technical drawings and specifications.
- Strong commercial acumen and understanding of project margins, risk management, and scope control.
- Experience working with ERP, CRM, or estimating software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to engage confidently with clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Desirable
- Experience within industrial manufacturing, resources, infrastructure, energy, food and beverage, or pharmaceutical sectors.
- Background in design-and-construct or EPC/EPCM project delivery.
- Site-based construction, installation, or maintenance experience.
- Knowledge of Australian engineering and construction standards.
- Experience with formal tender and procurement processes.
