Within Retail Technology, you’ll be part of our Consumer Cards Transformation (CCT) Crew under Consumer Finance Domain. The CCT Crew has end-to-end responsibility for the Commonwealth Bank Cards Modernisation, moving everything legacy to the cloud-based platforms including the core Cards Platform.

It is also dedicated to delivering the best workplace technology experience for our over 53,000 people across CBA and focused on providing the latest tools, technology, and resources to enhance the way we work together and empower our people to achieve more for our customers.
We are seeking an exceptional Principal Engineer to join our team and lead our efforts in designing and implementing highly resilient, scalable, and integrated systems. This individual contributor role will have a significant impact on shaping our technology implementation and roadmap, focusing on creating robust, high-performance solutions that can handle massive traffic and ensure seamless customer experiences.
You’ll be at the forefront of our technical strategy, working across teams to architect and design highly available and resilient systems. Your expertise will be crucial in evolving our infrastructure, optimizing our integration patterns, and ensuring our services can scale to meet the demands of millions of users.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
Have demonstrated experience in architecting and designing highly available, resilient, and scalable APIs and customer-facing systems
Can lead the development of integration patterns and strategies across our technology stack
Drives the adoption and implementation of best practices for cloud-native architectures on AWS and Azure
Collaborates with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve complex technical challenges
Contributes to the technology roadmap, influencing strategic decisions on system design and infrastructure
Mentors and guides other engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation
Conducts system design reviews and provide expert consultation on critical projects
Develop and implement strategies for monitoring, alerting, and rapid incident response
Continuously evaluate and recommend new technologies and approaches to enhance system resilience.
Tech Skills
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:
Very strong proficiency in C# (.NET ecosystem), Python, REST APIs, asynchronous patterns, and testing frameworks
Proven track record of architecting and delivering large-scale, mission-critical system
Exceptional understanding of integration patterns and microservices architectures
Deep expertise in designing and implementing highly available and high-traffic APIs
Risk mindset: proactively manage security, privacy, resiliency and change risk; evidence-based decision making
Cloud & Platform: AWS (Fargate, S3, EMR/Redshift optional), containerisation (preferably Docker), infrastructure-as-code
CI/CD & DevSecOps: GitHub Actions, ArgoCD; supply-chain security, automated quality gates
Observability & Reliability: Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, PagerDuty; performance engineering and chaos testing
GenAI: Agent Frameworks (Langgraph, Pydantic etc), MCP (for tools), AWS bedrock and familiarity with AI Evaluation
Any experience with the following would be great - Containerization technologies (high preference on Docker containers), Infrastructure-as-code tools, Event-driven architectures and message queuing systems, Performance tuning and optimization of large-scale systems.
