Lead API Engineer – Engineering Enablement & Collaboration - Digital Banking

We are working with a major global financial group seeking a Lead Software Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and getting the best out of the people around them. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll have genuine influence over architecture, engineering standards, delivery and the development of your team.
You’ll work on a secure, highly scalable, in-house built Engineering Enablement, Collaboration and Productivity platform that support thousands of employees and underpin critical business operations. This cloud-native platform integrates, via APIs, with some of the most well-known workplace productivity tools and is designed to simplifying complex workflows and project processes. As the Lead within the group, you will be responsible for the exploration of new and emerging technologies and AI capabilities to ensuring the team remains at the forefront of workplace innovation.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead and mentor a small team of experienced software engineers
- Balance hands-on development with technical and people leadership
- Design and architect scalable, secure distributed systems and microservices
- Drive sprint planning, priorities, delivery and engineering outcomes
- Set high standards for code quality, security and operational readiness
- Make key decisions around architecture, technology and engineering practices
- Get hands-on with complex and critical areas of the codebase
- Conduct code reviews and champion strong engineering standards
- Partner closely with Product Managers and Business Analysts
- Act as the technical escalation point for complex production issues
- Shape the team’s technical roadmap and long-term engineering direction
What you’ll bring
- 10+ years’ professional software engineering experience
- At least 5 years in a technical leadership or mentoring capacity
- Strong technical background designing and building reliable, fast, cloud-native applications using modern frameworks and languages (Java, Python, Node.js, or similar)
- Experience in leading systems design decisions, engaging in proof-of-concepts (POCs) and high-performance, critical code components
- Continuously improve development processes, tools, and techniques
- In-depth knowledge of containerisation, CI/CD, SOA, micro-services patterns, RESTful APIs, webhooks, and open-source libraries, tools, and frameworks
- Experience with employee enablement platforms (Slack, Atlassian, Microsoft Teams, or similar) and their APIs
- Strong understanding of software architecture and engineering principles
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a strategic mindset
- The ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly
