Primary objective
The Principal plays a vital role in delivering the strategic plan of the Department of Education through support to government school’s
music programs throughout the Northern Territory. The NT Music School delivers and supports a range of programs, providing a focus
and a showcase for performing arts education in NT government schools.
Context statement
The NT Music School provides music education services to students based in government schools across the NT. These services include
instrumental, ensemble and choral tuition across the Territory, NT-wide performance programs, special media and online music programs,
Indigenous music programs, advocacy and professional development. The NT Music School also has strong relationships with industry and
the arts sector.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead the development and implementation of the school’s vision with a focus on a shared respectful culture that challenges and sets
high expectations of both students and teachers to drive student outcomes, and effective teaching that promotes capable and
independent learners.
2. Deliver strategic leadership and operational management with the school community, to produce and implement clear evidence-based
improvement plans and policies.
3. Establish expectations for all staff to achieve high standards and build their capacity through professional development and
performance management.
4. Develop relationships with families and community groups to promote the value of public education, the school and its role in the
wider community.
5. Work with other principals and the department to drive the development of education services at a regional and system level.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated leadership in the development of teaching and learning programs to a diverse range of students in schools across the
Northern Territory.
2. Demonstrated leadership in teaching and learning of contemporary music programs.
3. Proven ability to build the capacity of self, others and develop high performing teams.
4. Demonstrated strategic leadership to drive innovation and change to achieve school improvement.
5. Demonstrated ability to lead the operational management of the school’s physical, financial and human resources.
6. Demonstrated ability to build a shared culture of high expectations, while developing and maintaining effective interpersonal and
cross-cultural relationships within and beyond the school community.
Desirable
1. Post-graduate qualifications in educational leadership.

• Registration with the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory and a Working with Children Clearance Notice (Ochre
Card), or the ability to obtain, is required in this position.
- The successful applicant will be required to adhere to and model the NTPS Code of Conduct (refer advertising attachments), the
Education Act, Financial Management Act, Public Sector Employment Management Act and other relevant legislation with the utmost
integrity. The successful applicant will also hold specific delegations under the abovementioned Acts and will therefore be required
to understand and follow these to maintain accountability.
- Successful applicants may elect ongoing employment pending eligibility or an executive contract fixed for 4 years.
