Position Tagline
Canterbury Hospital is seeking an Unaccredited Trainee in ICU and Anesthetics to join our medical team for the 2027 clinical year. This opportunity will support training doctors to meet the needs of the Canterbury patient population whilst developing expertise in a complex clinical environment. This position offers four (4) months of Anaesthetics training time across the clinical year.
Where you'll be working
Canterbury hospital is a 215-bed metropolitan acute general hospital in the Sydney Local Health District providing services in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Aged Care, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care. The facility is also undergoing a $350M redevelopment for expansion of acute clinical services planned in 2027. The Canterbury area is home to a culturally and linguistically diverse community catering to patients with complex health problems and limited access to health care. Canterbury Hospital therefore offers a unique opportunity for doctors in training to develop hands-on clinical experience whilst learning in a supervised environment.
What you'll be doing
Canterbury Hospital is offering a position as Unaccredited Trainee in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia for a period of twelve (12) months, including four (4) months of supervised Anaesthetics training. The remaining eight (8) months will provide experience and training in Intensive Care Medicine and Cardiology, supervised primarily by Critical Care specialists, with Cardiologist specialist supervision for Cardiology patients, in the combined Level 4 Intensive Unit (ICU)/Coronary Care Unit (CCU). The trainee will primarily be responsible for providing, under supervision, day-to-day management of patients who are admitted to the Level 4 ICU/CCU supported by a Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO).
Canterbury Hospital ICU/CCU is a twelve (12)-bed centrally monitored designated Level 4 ICU. The Unit provides for haemodynamic support and intensive monitoring as well as non-invasive ventilation but does not provide prolonged invasive ventilation or dialysis/renal replacement therapy. Approximately 1500 patients are admitted annually to the Unit. Patients who deteriorate and require escalation of care are transferred in a well-established network arrangement, primarily to the supporting Level 6 ICU at Concord Hospital. It is an open ICU where inpatient consultants remain primarily responsible for management decisions for patients admitted under their care. The Unit has dedicated ICU nurses in a 1: 3 ratio with a dedicated Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Consultant, also coordinating and managing the Rapid Response (Medical Emergency Team (MET)) system for the Facility. The case mix in the Unit is approximately 60% Coronary Care: including heart failure, NSTEMIs and arrhythmias/syncope for investigation/management, and approximately 40% Intensive Care: common conditions include post-operative surgical care and monitoring, sepsis requiring haemodynamic support, diabetic ketoacidosis, and respiratory failure requiring non-invasive ventilatory support.
This position requires flexibility for a rotating roster which will include twelve (12) hour day or night shifts to provide cover seven (7) days per week in ICU, with a maximum of seven (7) shifts per fortnight in ICU, and on-call for sick relief pro rata. The ICU trainee will also act as Medical Officer in Charge (MOIC) for the hospital between 2300 and 0800, attending ward emergency calls overnight and supporting a junior medical officer. Rostering will be in accordance with NSW Ministry of Health JMO Safe Working Hours.
