The ENT Surgery term at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and Griffith Base Hospital provides junior doctors with the opportunity to develop clinical and surgical skills within a specialty that encompasses a broad range of head and neck conditions affecting patients of all ages.
Working alongside experienced Otolaryngologists, SET Trainees and multidisciplinary teams, unaccredited trainees are actively involved in the assessment, investigation and management of patients with ear, nose and throat disorders. The role includes exposure to both elective and emergency presentations, perioperative care, inpatient management, outpatient clinics and operative procedures.
At Royal North Shore Hospital, trainees gain experience within a major tertiary referral centre managing complex head and neck pathology, advanced airway disorders, otology, rhinology and specialist ENT conditions. At Griffith Base Hospital, trainees are exposed to a broad regional case mix and the unique challenges and opportunities of regional healthcare delivery, enhancing clinical independence and decision-making skills.
This combination of metropolitan and regional training provides valuable exposure to a wide spectrum of ENT practice, including head and neck surgery, airway management, sleep-related disorders, paediatric ENT conditions and acute emergency presentations. Trainees develop strong skills in patient assessment, perioperative management, multidisciplinary collaboration and surgical care.

What you'll be doing
These positions are for an Unaccredited Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Trainee, the 12 months to be spent at Royal North Shore Hospital and Ryde Hospitals.
The purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The unaccredited Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery trainee is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery unaccredited trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. They will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding a patient’s care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
The position is full time, Monday to Friday with rostered on-call on the Otolaryngology Trainee roster (with supervision.)
The role will predominantly be to support the SET Trainees in assessment of emergency patients, seeing consults and assisting in the operating theatres as well as the routine functioning of the unit. The trainee is expected to attend all department training meetings.
To be employed by NSW Health, applicants must provide evidence of vaccination and comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive (PD2024_01. Compliance with this policy, including any amendments made from time to time, is a mandatory condition of employment.
Applicants will be required to provide acceptable evidence of their vaccination status, immunity, and any other occupational health requirements relevant to the position. Evidence must be submitted and assessed in accordance with NSW Health requirements prior to commencement.
This position requires a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by Service NSW. A current and valid WWCC is a mandatory requirement for appointment to this role.
