What you'll do
The Data Center Technician is the primary custodian of our physical footprint within multi-tenant colocation facilities. This role focuses on "Inside the Cage" operations, ensuring 100% asset accuracy, world-class cabling standards, and coordination with facility providers. You will maintain the "Digital Twin" of our environment using DCIM tools while serving as the main point of contact for all site-related activities.
The day-to-day
Cage Standards & Physical Infrastructure
- Gold-Standard Cabling: Deploy cabling (Cat6, SMF, MMF) using strict labelling schemas and "Velcro-only" management.
- Airflow Integrity: Maintain thermal efficiency by ensuring 100% use of blanking panels and adhering to hot/cold aisle containment protocols.
- Cage Housekeeping: Maintain a "tour-ready" environment; handle the removal of cardboard, debris, and orphaned cables.
- Audit Readiness: Perform regular site visits and physical audits to verify that the physical state of the cage matches the documentation.
DCIM
- Source of Truth: Maintain 100% accuracy in DCIM. All Moves, Adds, and Changes must be planned ahead of time.
- Connectivity Mapping: Map and document all end-to-end cable paths, including cross-connects to the facility Meet-Me-Room.
- Capacity Monitoring: Use DCIM tools to monitor power draw per rack and available RU space to prevent over-subscription.
Colocation Etiquette & Vendor Liaison
- Site Coordination: Lead the end-to-end shipping and receiving process
- Escalation Management: Act as the on-site point of contact for the colo provider’s facility team regarding power drops, cooling issues, or security breaches.
- Remote Hands Supervision: Coordinate third-party vendors or facility "Remote Hands" when they are granted access to our private cage.
- Protocol Compliance: Rigorously adhere to the facility's Security and Health & Safety (EHS) rules.
Technical Execution (L1/L2)
- Rack & Stack: Unbox, inspect, rack, and cable servers and network hardware according to DCIM elevation designs.
- Break-Fix: Replace failed components and devices.
- Optical Testing: Use light meters and loopbacks to troubleshoot fiber connectivity issues before addressing customer concerns.
What you'll need
- 5 years' of experience working in Data Center environment as a technician overseeing the operations of the data center.
- Tools: Direct experience with Patch Manager, NetBox, or similar DCIM platforms is required.
- Standards: Knowledge of cabling standards and data center best practices.
What will help you on the job
- Communication: Ability to communicate clear, concise updates to remote engineering teams during critical outages.
- Physical: Ability to lift 23kg and work in a high-noise, temperature-controlled environment.
- Travel: Travel to local DCs weekly, regional DCs monthly and global travel annually
- Hold a valid driver's license
