Position: Engineering Technologist (Mechanical)

We seek a passionate and skilled Engineering Technologist (Mechanical) to join our engineering division.
About the Role:
The successful candidate must possess practical waste industry experience and demonstrate the ability to apply mechanical engineering principles within a waste management operational environment. This role combines engineering design, mechanical analysis, fabrication support, welding, site commissioning, equipment maintenance, and IT platform operational integration and optimisation. In that regard, KS Environmental is heavily dependent on the global waste management industry management software platform known as “WastEdge” and requires a candidate with suitable prior experience with WastEdge.
Salary: $80,000 – $90,000 per annum plus superannuation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilise WastEdge, Webreq and Gearbox systems to monitor operational performance, asset maintenance schedules, fleet utilisation, and engineering projects.
- Design and optimise truck wash bay systems, water recycling systems, pumping stations, hydraulic systems design / repair and waste processing equipment.
- Prepare detailed 3D CAD models, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and installation documentation.
- Perform engineering calculations including flow rate analysis, pressure loss calculations, pump selection, structural loading assessments, and material strength verification.
- Conduct equipment inspections, troubleshooting, commissioning, and performance testing of waste management infrastructure and associated mechanical systems.
- Support fabrication activities including welding inspections, fabrication quality control and mechanical assembly verification.
- Develop Bills of Materials (BOMs), maintenance schedules, technical reports, risk assessments, and standard operating procedures.
- Provide on-site engineering support for waste transfer stations, recycling facilities, compactor units, skip bin systems, hook-lift equipment, and fleet assets.
- Ensure compliance with EPA Victoria requirements, environmental regulations, Australian Standards, and workplace safety obligations.
Mandatory Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must demonstrate all the following:
- Demonstrated suitable experience using waste management software platforms such as WastEdge, and related industry-specific waste management systems.
- Demonstrated suitable experience using fleet management software such as Gearbox maintenance management system.
- Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or closely related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years full-time experience in the Australian waste management, recycling, or resource recovery industry (non-waste industry experience will not be considered).
- Demonstrated experience working with waste collection vehicles, rear loaders, front lift vehicles, skip loaders, hook-lift systems, compactors, transfer stations, or recycling facilities.
- Demonstrated experience in engineering design for operational waste environments (not purely office-based design roles).
- Sound knowledge of EPA Victoria regulations, waste classification frameworks, environmental compliance obligations, and operational requirements applicable to waste facilities.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software and production of manufacturing drawings.
- Current Australian driver's license.
Applicants must demonstrate competency in:
- TIG / MIG / ARC welding.
- Mechanical fabrication and workshop practices.
- Hydraulic and fluid system design.
- Pump selection and fluid transfer calculations.
- Mechanical fault finding and troubleshooting.
- Interpretation of engineering drawings and fabrication documentation.
- Risk assessment and safe work practices.
