Primary objective
The Senior Executive Officer will manage the Deputy Chief Executive Early Years and School Services office and provide high-level
executive support and advice (strategic and operational) to the division head.
Context statement
The Early Years and School Services Division is responsible for providing inclusion, engagement, teaching and learning services to
early childhood education and care centres and schools across the Northern Territory. This role supports the Deputy Chief
Executive in the delivery of these services and plays a critical role in leading the executive support services for the division.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high level strategic support and advice for key governance, quality assurance, risk, and service management standards
and processes for the Division Head.
2. Coordinate and manage complex strategic projects including initiatives arising from Cabinet and provide advice to others about
strategic projects.
3. Initiate, coordinate, research, and prepare high level confidential and sensitive briefings, submissions, reports and
correspondence on a range of strategic priorities, operational policy and procedures.
4. Lead and manage a high performing team.
5. Build and sustain collaborative relationships and with a variety of stakeholders including the Chief Executive and other senior
departmental staff members, the Minister’s Office and other government agencies and external stakeholders.
6. Review, develop and where appropriate, implement systems and processes to improve the effectiveness and responsiveness
of the Office.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Superior oral, written, interpersonal, negotiation skills and the ability to build and maintain effective networks and communicate

3. Exceptional conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to discern sensitive issues and anticipate and identify

7. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Desirable
1. Bachelor level or post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
2. Knowledge and understanding of government and departmental processes including preparing high level reports, discussion
papers and correspondence including Ministerial and executive briefings.
3. Contemporary knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
4. Knowledge of education systems and the strategic directions and objectives of the Department of Education and Northern
Territory Government.
