Medical Secretary — help build a new specialist practice
Riverina Rheumatology is a new solo specialist rheumatology practice in Wagga Wagga. We opened in July 2026 and we're building our team.
Dr Elaine Ng is the Riverina's locally based rheumatologist. Until now, patients across the Murrumbidgee have waited months to see a visiting specialist, or travelled to Sydney or Melbourne. This practice exists to change that — which means the work you do here has a direct effect on people who have often waited a long time for care.
The hours
We are open to full-time, part-time or casual arrangements and will adjust the role and the hours to suit the right candidate.
Consulting days range from two to four days a week, Monday to Thursday, 7:45am-5:15pm. No weekends, no evenings, no on-call.
Tell us what suits you. If you're working around school hours, study or another commitment, say so in your application — we'd rather build the arrangement around a good person than lose them over a start time.
If you and a colleague would like to split the week between you, apply together and tell us how you'd divide it. We'd be glad to hear from two people who already work well together.
What you'll be doing
- Welcoming patients and attending them on arrival and departure
- Preparing and turning over consulting rooms on clinic days
- Answering phones and emails, and responding to enquiries from patients and doctors
- Processing referrals and booking appointments
- Filing clinical results as they are received
- Managing the appointment book, waiting list and cancellations
- Raising accounts, processing payments and supporting Medicare and health fund billing
- Keeping patient records accurate and confidential
- Actioning tasks from the physician and supporting the practice manager
What we're looking for
Previous medical reception experience is preferred but not essential. If you've built the relevant skills somewhere else — pharmacy, veterinary practice, allied health, hospital administration, or any busy customer-facing role where accuracy and discretion mattered — we'd welcome your application.
- Clear, warm communication in person, on the phone and in writing. Many of our patients live with chronic pain and have waited a long time for their appointment, and how they're treated at the front desk shapes their whole experience of the practice
- The ability to juggle a ringing phone, an arriving patient and an urgent email at once
- Real attention to detail — in a medical setting, small errors matter
- Initiative, and the ability to see what needs doing without being asked
- Reliability and punctuality
- Discretion and a serious commitment to confidentiality
- Sound computer literacy. We use Gentu and Microsoft 365 — experience with either is an advantage and will get you up to speed sooner, but we're happy to train the right person
What we offer
- A small, supportive team where you won't be a number
- Full induction and ongoing training by the practice manager and doctor
- Free on-site parking
- The chance to help shape a new practice rather than inherit someone else's systems
Requirements
- Right to work in Australia
- National Police Check
- Immunisation in line with NSW Health requirements for healthcare workers
