Nova Life Support Services is seeking an experienced, energetic and compassionate Disability Support Worker to provide ongoing 1:1 support to a male participant in his 30s living with Down Syndrome, Epilepsy and neurological support needs.
This role would suit someone who is proactive, reliable, highly observant and able to build genuine rapport while maintaining strong professional boundaries. The successful applicant will be supporting the participant to access the community, build independence, develop life skills and engage in activities aligned with his interests.
This is a long-term support opportunity, and we are seeking someone committed to consistency and developing a positive, meaningful relationship with the participant.
Mandatory Availability
Applicants must be available for:
- Tuesday afternoons
- Friday afternoons
- Weekends (Saturday and/or Sunday)
Additional shifts, respite opportunities and community access supports may also become available.
About the Participant
The participant enjoys:
- Attending NRL games and sporting events
- Listening to Screamo, Rock and Alternative music
- Swimming and hydrotherapy
- Movies and community outings
- Public transport and train travel
- Exploring new places and activities
The participant communicates using a combination of minimal verbal communication and Simplified Sign/Key Word Sign.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting community access and social participation
- Building independence and daily living skills
- Supporting communication using Simplified Sign/Key Word Sign
- Swimming and hydrotherapy support
- Monitoring wellbeing, fatigue, cognition and seizure indicators
- Providing assistance with personal care when required
- Supporting healthy lifestyle choices
- Following risk assessments, support plans and health management plans
- Collecting and recording participant data accurately
- Completing detailed progress notes and documentation
- Maintaining participant safety, dignity and choice at all times
Essential Requirements
- Current NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Current Working With Children Check
- Current First Aid and CPR Certificate
- Unrestricted Australian Driver Licence
- Reliable and comprehensively insured vehicle
- Strong swimmer and confident in the water
- Willing and able to enter the pool and participate in swimming supports when required
- Experience supporting people with neurological conditions
- Experience supporting people living with epilepsy
- Excellent written communication and documentation skills
- Ability to identify and report subtle changes in presentation, behaviour or wellbeing
- Strong attention to detail
Highly Desirable
- Experience supporting people with Down Syndrome
- Experience using Simplified Sign or Key Word Sign
- Experience with hydrotherapy supports
- Experience supporting non-verbal or minimally verbal participants
- Understanding of cognitive decline and neurological presentations
- Experience collecting behavioural, cognitive or health-related data
