The Mission - Why This Program, Why Now?
You're joining at the defining moment of one of the most significant technology programmes Australia has ever undertaken. This programme will build and operate the dedicated cloud giving Australia's national security community and its allies the capability to see more, share more, innovate and act faster than ever before.
The architectural decisions being made now - how we structure networking, implement security controls, and automate at scale - will shape how Australia's national security community operates for the next decade. You won't be inheriting someone else's design choices. You'll be making them.
Your Role - Security Specialist, Region Services
Imagine being the person who ensures that over 100 AWS services meet the rigorous security standards demanded by Australia's most critical missions. As a Security Specialist within AWS Region Services, you'll stand at the intersection of global cloud innovation and sovereign security — leading the onboarding and assurance of cloud services into one of the most consequential regional deployments in AWS history.
This isn't a role where you follow a playbook someone else wrote. You'll be the one writing it. From conducting Security Risk Assessments to designing data transfer patterns and establishing security baselines, your analytical mind and deep technical expertise will directly shape how Australia's national security community accesses and trusts cloud capability.
You'll partner with over 100 AWS commercial service teams globally — a breadth of collaboration that few security roles anywhere in the world can offer. Every engagement sharpens your expertise. Every framework you build becomes the standard others follow. Every risk you identify and resolve strengthens the security posture of an entire nation's digital infrastructure.
Your growth here isn't incremental — it's exponential. You'll work alongside industry experts, gain exposure to cloud-native technologies, enterprise gateways, and data transfer solutions, and build a career story that few can match. The mentoring, continuous learning, and collaboration baked into this team's DNA will accelerate your professional journey in ways you haven't yet imagined.
Are you ready to be the person Australia's national security community trusts to get this right?
Key job responsibilities
You'll be the security authority that bridges global AWS innovation with Australia's sovereign requirements — and the impact of your work will be felt across an entire nation's security apparatus.
Your days will be defined by leadership and ownership. You'll lead the security onboarding and assurance of region-specific cloud services, ensuring every service that enters this environment meets the operational readiness bar demanded by Australia's most sensitive missions. You'll review and contribute to technical documentation from global service teams, translating complex security requirements into clear, actionable guidance that teams worldwide can follow.
Partnership is at the heart of this role. You'll work directly with service teams and customers to establish security baselines, define control objectives, and ensure alignment with Australian security frameworks. You'll lead auditing engagements for data-flow controls, incorporating service assurance and audit frameworks that set the benchmark for secure operations.
Your technical depth will shine as you conduct thorough reviews of transfer policies, create and maintain patterns for secure data transfer, and collect evidence of key controls across AWS environments. You'll communicate security outcomes with clarity and confidence to both customers and service teams — turning complex technical findings into strategic guidance that drives optimal security outcomes.
Beyond the day-to-day, you'll identify risks and improvement opportunities, investigate non-conformance events, and work with global teams to drive product improvements and innovative solutions. You'll also participate in the on-call rotation, ensuring the security posture you've built remains resilient around the clock.
A day in the life
Your morning begins with purpose. You open your laptop knowing that the work you do today directly strengthens Australia's national security capability. Perhaps you're reviewing a new AWS service submission — dissecting its architecture, mapping data flows, and assessing whether it meets the security baselines you've helped establish. Your analytical mind spots a gap in a transfer policy; you document it clearly and reach out to the global service team to collaborate on a resolution.
Mid-morning, you're in a working session with one of the 100+ AWS commercial service teams. They're preparing a service for regional onboarding, and they need your expertise on Australian security frameworks. You help them interpret the security frameworks requirements with the confidence
After lunch, you shift to an auditing engagement. You're reviewing data-flow controls, collecting evidence of key controls, and preparing documentation. The attention to detail you bring here isn't just thoroughness — it's the foundation of trust between AWS and Australia's national security community.
Later in the afternoon, you join a cross-functional discussion about a feature request that could improve security outcomes for the entire region. You bring the customer perspective, the technical depth, and the strategic vision to articulate why this matters. Your input shapes the product roadmap.
Before you wrap up, you review customer-facing documentation you've been developing — ensuring it provides clear, strategic security guidance. You reflect on a day where you've collaborated globally, solved complex problems locally, and moved the needle on one of the most important technology programmes Australia has ever seen.
