The Aviation, Land and Maritime Transport (ALMT) Program is responsible for the Bureau's business relationships with service delivery partners, government stakeholders, and both domestic and international customers operating in the Aviation, Land and Maritime Transport sectors.
In particular, the Aviation, Land and Maritime Transport Program is the sole provider of aviation meteorological services to the aviation industry within the Australian Flight Information Regions. Australian Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASRs) require pilots to plan flights using Bureau products. The Bureau's aviation services also contribute to meeting Australia's obligations under the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
In Australia, aviation meteorological products and services for operations below 10,000 feet are delivered by two forecasting centres: Brisbane Aviation Forecasting Centre (AFC) and Melbourne AFC. Operating within a 24/7 shift environment, the Senior Aviation Meteorologist - Aviation Forecasting Centre provides operational leadership, oversight and technical direction across these teams. The role requires strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, particularly the Hazardous Weather Unit (HWU) and National Operations Management Centre (NOMC).
The Senior Aviation Meteorologist provides key operational leadership for the AFC while on duty, and is a primary contact point for managers, aviation customers and other Bureau teams. Within the Brisbane and Melbourne AFCs, the Senior Aviation Meteorologist provides oversight and coordinates the preparation of aviation forecasts and warnings across their area of responsibility. This includes managing shift resources and workload allocations, providing technical guidance and expertise, coordinating policy with other forecasting centres, monitoring technical and system outages alerts and escalating risks or issues to the Operations Manager as required. In order to meet operational requirements and ensure flight safety resilience this role is, at times, required to be performed in person in the respective Operations Centre (Melbourne or Brisbane).
In addition to Operational leadership, the role provides mentoring and support for staff development, leading performance conversations and identifying training and upskilling opportunities. The Senior Aviation Meteorologist helps uplift and maintain a culture of continuous improvement and leads their operational teams through change.
Senior Aviation Meteorologists are required to maintain an Aeronautical Meteorological Forecaster Competency, in keeping with current Quality Management requirements. Aviation specific training and certification will be provided
