Applications are invited for the TS1 trainee (provisional trainee) in Emergency Department. The Provisional Trainee will be required to participate in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered to day, evening and night shifts across a seven day roster. They are responsible for assessment and management of patient’s presenting to the Emergency Department; communication of assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care; communication with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations; arrangement of patient discharge process and liaison with GP’s and other community care services to ensure the provision of optimal patient care to patients presenting to St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Work in the Emergency Department is at times demanding and difficult. Patients come from all levels of society and present a wide spectrum of both medical and social problems. All actions and comments must be made with this in mind. All patients should be treated with dignity and respect. Because the Emergency Department is often crowded and busy, staff should be mindful that they need to protect patients’ privacy and confidentiality at all times. Despite these demands, work in the Emergency Department can be extremely fulfilling on a personal and a professional level. The courtesy and cooperation of all staff are essential to maintain the proper functioning of the Emergency Department.

What you'll be doing
St Vincent's Hospital Sydney Emergency Department is a high-acuity tertiary referral service seeing approximately 51,000 presentations each year. Around 46% of patients presenting to the department are admitted, accounting for approximately half of all hospital admissions. The department manages a broad range of presentations across all areas of emergency medicine and provides care to a complex and diverse patient population. St Vincent’s is a designated trauma centre and provides advanced tertiary services including ECMO.
Emergency medicine at St Vincent’s is varied, fast paced and clinically rewarding. Patients present with a wide range of medical, surgical and psychosocial needs, reflecting the diversity and complexity of the communities we serve. The department is often busy, and trainees are supported to develop strong clinical skills while maintaining a commitment to patient privacy, dignity and high-quality care.
The department is committed to equitable care, including through the FLEXI Clinic, which supports improved access and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. St Vincent’s provides all major adult specialty services on site, with the exception of paediatrics and obstetrics. Patients requiring paediatric or obstetric care who present to the department are assessed, stabilised and transferred to the most appropriate service when required.
TERMS:
TS1 trainees undertake a broad range of rotations within St Vincent’s, including Emergency, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care, Drug and Alcohol, and our PANDA unit (Psychiatric and Non-prescription Drug and Alcohol). These terms provide broad clinical exposure and a strong foundation across core emergency medicine and related specialties.
Additional secondment opportunities are available across a range of network and affiliated sites, including Sutherland Hospital, Sydney Children's Hospital, Canterbury Hospital, and Northern Beaches Hospital.
As trainees progress, there are opportunities to pursue areas of interest including simulation, ultrasound, research, medical education and rural emergency medicine through tailored rotations and secondments.
EDUCATION and WELL-BEING:
The department provides a comprehensive Primary Examination preparation program and structured educational support throughout training. All teaching is aligned with Australasian College for Emergency Medicine requirements and is supported by experienced FACEM supervisors.
Trainee wellbeing is a strong focus within the department. St Vincent’s is committed to fostering a supportive and sustainable training environment, including tailored support for trainees returning from parental leave. In recognition of this work, the department received the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine National Wellbeing Award in 2023.
