The role
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Motor Mechanic to join our team. The role involves maintaining, testing, diagnosing and repairing petrol engines and the mechanical parts of lightweight motor vehicles, including transmissions, suspension, steering and braking systems.
You will be responsible for carrying out scheduled servicing, fault diagnosis, repairs, parts replacement and performance testing in accordance with manufacturer specifications, service manuals and workshop procedures. The role requires accurate diagnosis of mechanical and electrical faults, safe dismantling and reassembly of vehicle components, and the use of appropriate hand tools, workshop equipment and computer-based diagnostic systems.
The successful candidate will be expected to work efficiently within a busy workshop, maintain accurate records of work completed, support the preparation and ongoing servicing of vehicles, and ensure all work is completed safely and to the required standard.
Flexibility is essential, as the role may involve working across business operating hours, including Saturdays.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Maintain, test and repair petrol engines and mechanical components of lightweight motor vehicles.
- Detect and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in engines, transmissions, suspension, steering, braking systems and related vehicle components.
- Use computer-based diagnostic equipment, testing procedures and road testing where required to identify faults and confirm repair outcomes.
- Dismantle and remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components, and inspect parts for wear, damage or defects.
- Repair, adjust or replace worn, damaged or defective parts and reassemble mechanical components with reference to service manuals and manufacturer specifications.
- Perform scheduled maintenance services, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, safety checks and engine tune-ups, to support smooth vehicle operation and compliance with pollution requirements.
- Reassemble engines and mechanical parts after repairs have been completed.
- Test and adjust repaired mechanical parts and systems to ensure proper performance, roadworthiness and safe operation.
- Inspect vehicles and identify work required to achieve roadworthiness, where required and where permitted by applicable regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, servicing, repairs, parts used and work completed.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop and ensure compliance with workplace health and safety requirements at all times.
Required qualifications and experience
- Certificate III in automotive mechanical technology at least two (2) years of relevant experience; or
- Certificate IV or higher in automotive mechanical technology and at least one (1) year of relevant experience; or
- At least three (3) years of highly relevant work experience may substitute for the above formal qualifications.
