## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and meticulous Precision Instrument Maker and Repairer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for assembling, calibrating, installing, and overhauling a wide range of mechanical precision instruments and equipment. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical background, exceptional attention to detail, and a methodical approach to both new builds and complex repair work. This position suits a hands-on professional who takes pride in precision craftsmanship and thrives in a technical, workshop-based environment.
## Key Responsibilities
- Assemble components and sub-assemblies for a variety of precision instruments, including timepieces, locks, firearms, and measuring equipment, ensuring all parts meet exact tolerances and specifications.
- Dismantle, inspect, and diagnose faults in precision instruments and mechanical devices, then repair or replace defective components and reassemble articles to manufacturer standards using hand tools, power tools, and specialist machinery.
- Calibrate precision instruments using standard weights, measures, jigs, fixtures, and calibration tools, making fine adjustments to align parts and balance weights to achieve accurate readings.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, engineering schematics, and manufacturer manuals to guide assembly, repair, and calibration work.
- Conduct quality assurance checks throughout the production and repair process to verify that instruments perform within required tolerances and meet applicable safety and industry standards.
- Maintain accurate service records and documentation for all work undertaken, including fault diagnoses, parts used, calibration results, and completed repairs.
- Source, order, and manage workshop materials, components, and spare parts, liaising with suppliers to ensure timely availability of specialist items.
- Estimate costs and prepare detailed repair quotations for clients, drawing on knowledge of parts, labour, and timeframes.
- Operate and maintain a range of workshop machinery and precision tools, ensuring equipment is in safe working order and performing routine maintenance as required.
- Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other trades professionals to support complex projects or multi-discipline repair tasks.
- Advise clients on instrument care, maintenance schedules, and operational best practices to extend the service life of their equipment.
- Keep the workshop organised and compliant with workplace health and safety regulations, including the safe handling and storage of tools, parts, and chemicals.
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Completion of a relevant trade qualification or apprenticeship in precision instrument making, watchmaking, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience working with precision mechanical instruments, timepieces, locks, firearms, or similar devices in a professional setting.
- Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and specialist workshop machinery associated with precision instrument work.
- Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, engineering diagrams, and service manuals.
- Solid understanding of calibration principles and experience using calibration tools, jigs, and fixtures.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical, patient approach to fault diagnosis and repair.
- Good numeracy skills with the ability to take and assess precise measurements accurately.
- Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety practices relevant to a workshop environment.
- Ability to communicate clearly with clients and colleagues, both verbally and in written documentation.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple jobs and prioritise workloads effectively.
## Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate III or higher in Engineering – Mechanical Trade or a related field (or equivalent overseas qualification assessed by the relevant authority).
- Experience with electronic or electromechanical precision instruments in addition to purely mechanical devices.
- Familiarity with relevant Australian Standards or industry compliance requirements for precision instrumentation.
- Previous experience preparing cost estimates and client-facing repair quotations.
