The Department of the Senate is seeking applications from those interested in joining the Procedure Office in the role of Procedure Officer.
The position provides a valuable opportunity to learn about the work of the Parliament, and develop strong procedural knowledge in relation to the Senate, as well as an excellent understanding of the legislative process and legislative documents.
The successful applicant will be offered a 12 month non-ongoing engagement, with the possibility of extension or ongoing employment.
The Procedure Officer works directly with the Clerk Assistant (Procedure), providing administrative support, including assisting with the drafting of parliamentary procedural and administrative documents. This includes supporting the work of the Senate by preparing procedural documents, and facilitating the circulation of legislative and procedural documents. The officer is the point of contact for senators and their staff seeking advice and support from the Clerk Assistant (Procedure) and the procedural and legislative drafting team.
The Procedure Officer also compiles and maintains databases and prepares material for publication on the internet and intranet. Other duties include maintaining and updating templates, proformas and electronic files for amendments and private senators’ bills.
The Procedure Officer is familiar with software packages such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. The occupant also demonstrates excellent communication skills, including the ability to answer queries from senators and their staff and an awareness of confidentiality requirements in a sensitive parliamentary environment, and has the ability to work to consistently high-standards, on occasions for long hours during sitting weeks.
