# Surgical Technician – Hair Transplant

## About Us
Evolved Hair Restoration is a specialist medical clinic based in South Perth, Western Australia, providing surgical hair restoration using **Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)**.
As our surgical caseload continues to grow, we are expanding our clinical team and seeking a skilled and highly organised **Surgical Technician / Hair Transplant Technician** to support our doctors and nursing team during hair transplant procedures.
## About the Role
The Surgical Technician will provide technical and procedural support before, during and after hair transplant procedures.
A major component of this role is **precision loading of follicular grafts into Choi implanter pens** for Direct Hair Implantation. You will also be responsible for operating theatre preparation, patient preparation, surgical instrument preparation, PRP preparation, sterilisation and maintaining adequate surgical stock levels.
This is a hands-on role requiring excellent attention to detail, efficiency and the ability to maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.
## Key Responsibilities
1. Choi Pen Loading & Graft Handling
* Perform **precision loading of follicular grafts into Choi implanter pens** during DHI procedures.
* Handle follicular grafts carefully and efficiently in accordance with clinic protocols.
* Assist with graft counting, organisation, hydration and storage.
* Ensure grafts are handled in a manner that minimises unnecessary manipulation and supports graft viability.
* Maintain an efficient supply of correctly loaded Choi pens to the implanting doctor throughout the procedure.
2. Operating Theatre Preparation
* Prepare the operating theatre prior to each hair transplant procedure.
* Clean and prepare surgical trolleys, procedure lights, equipment and work surfaces.
* Set up required consumables, instruments, Choi pens and other equipment for extraction and implantation.
* Ensure all required sterile and non-sterile equipment is available before commencement of the procedure.
* Assist with maintaining an organised and clean procedural environment throughout the day.
* Assist with theatre turnover and preparation between patients.
3. Patient Preparation
* Prepare patients for hair transplant procedures under the direction of the treating doctor or Registered Nurse.
* **Shave and prepare the patient's scalp** according to the planned procedure and instructions of the treating doctor.
* Assist with positioning and general procedural preparation.
* Assist with pre-operative photography and other non-clinical preparation where required.
4. PRP Preparation
* Prepare PRP equipment and consumables for procedures.
* Process collected blood using the clinic's approved PRP system and centrifuge according to established protocols.
* Prepare PRP for use by the treating clinician.
* Maintain correct identification and handling of patient specimens throughout preparation.
* **Venepuncture and blood collection are specifically excluded from this role** and will be performed by an appropriately qualified clinician.
5. Surgical Instruments & Equipment
* Prepare surgical instruments and equipment required for **FUE extraction and DHI implantation**.
* Prepare punches, forceps, implanter pens and other procedure-specific instruments as directed.
* Check instruments and equipment before procedures to ensure they are clean, functional and ready for use.
* Clean and process reusable surgical instruments following procedures in accordance with clinic protocols.
6. Sterilisation & Infection Control
* Perform cleaning, disinfection, packaging and **autoclave sterilisation of reusable surgical instruments** in accordance with clinic procedures and applicable infection prevention and control requirements.
* Correctly package and label instruments prior to sterilisation.
* Maintain sterilisation records and associated documentation.
* Monitor sterilisation processes and report equipment faults or failed cycles immediately.
* Maintain strict infection prevention and control standards throughout all areas of the clinic.
* Ensure sterile instruments are stored correctly and remain protected from contamination.
7. Stock & Consumables Management
* Monitor surgical instruments, consumables and clinical stock levels.
* Maintain accurate stock records and identify upcoming requirements.
* Prepare stock orders sufficiently in advance to prevent disruption to scheduled procedures.
* Maintain approximately **2–3 months of essential surgical consumables**, where practical and appropriate.
* Monitor expiry dates and rotate stock to minimise wastage.
* Notify management in advance of low stock, supply delays or discontinued products.
* Assist with receiving, checking and correctly storing incoming surgical supplies.
* Ensure required stock is available and prepared ahead of scheduled surgical lists.
8. Health & Safety
* Comply with Work Health and Safety requirements and clinic policies.
* Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
* Correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
* Identify and report workplace or clinical hazards, incidents and equipment faults.
* Maintain a clean, organised and safe procedural environment.
* Follow appropriate procedures for handling sharps, clinical waste and contaminated instruments.
## Qualifications & Experience
1. Essential
* Previous experience working in a **hair transplant, surgical, procedural or clinical environment**.
* Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
* Ability to work efficiently during lengthy surgical procedures.
* Strong understanding of sterile technique and infection prevention and control.
* Ability to follow clinical protocols and instructions from doctors and Registered Nurses.
* Excellent organisational and communication skills.
* Reliable, punctual and able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team.
2. Highly Desirable
* **Previous experience loading Choi implanter pens for DHI hair transplantation.**
* Previous hair transplant technician experience.
* Experience with follicular graft handling and preservation.
* Experience preparing instruments for FUE extraction and DHI implantation.
* Experience with PRP preparation and centrifuge operation.
* Experience with instrument reprocessing and autoclave sterilisation.
* Previous experience managing surgical consumables and stock.
## Scope of the Role
This is a **Surgical Technician support position** and does not replace the role of a Registered Nurse or medical practitioner.
The position does **not** include:
* Independent administration of prescription medications.
* Independent nursing assessments.
* Independent clinical decision-making.
* Duties that require registration as a Registered Nurse or medical practitioner.
All duties must be performed within the employee's training and competency and in accordance with clinic policies and the direction of the treating doctor and Registered Nurse.
