Spirit of India Restaurant is seeking a reliable and experienced Cook to assist in the preparation and cooking of Indian cuisine. The Cook will be responsible for preparing ingredients, cooking menu items, supporting the Chef during service, and maintaining cleanliness and food safety standards in the kitchen.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare ingredients for cooking, including washing, cutting, chopping, marinating and portioning vegetables, meat, seafood and other food items.
- Cook Indian dishes such as curries, rice dishes, entrees, tandoori items, breads and side dishes under the guidance of the Chef.
- Follow restaurant recipes, cooking methods and presentation standards to ensure consistency and quality.
- Assist in preparing curry bases, sauces, gravies, spice mixes and marinades used in Indian cuisine.
- Operate kitchen equipment including stoves, ovens, grills, fryers, tandoor and other commercial kitchen appliances.
- Monitor cooking times, food temperatures and portion sizes to ensure meals are prepared correctly.
- Assist with food plating and presentation before meals are served to customers.
- Support the Chef and other kitchen staff during busy service periods to ensure timely preparation of orders.
- Check food quality and freshness before preparation and report any issues to the Chef or restaurant manager.
- Store food items correctly and maintain proper stock rotation to reduce wastage.
- Clean work areas, utensils, equipment and kitchen surfaces in accordance with hygiene and food safety standards.
- Follow all workplace health and safety procedures, including safe handling of hot equipment, sharp tools and food products.
- Assist with receiving and storing kitchen supplies, ingredients and stock deliveries.
- Help maintain a clean, organised and efficient kitchen environment.
Required Skills and Experience
- Previous experience as a Cook, preferably in Indian cuisine or a busy restaurant kitchen.
- Basic knowledge of Indian cooking, spices, curry preparation and tandoori items.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a kitchen team.
- Good time management and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of safe food handling and kitchen hygiene practices.
Pay: $75,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year
