Primary objective
Administer environmental spatial systems, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications, relational databases, and
web mapping applications, to support the publication of spatial data products to internal and external clients. The role collaborates
across the Department to ensure spatial data, technologies, and systems are consistently managed, optimised and aligned with
stakeholder and business requirements.
Context statement
Geospatial Services supports natural resource management programs through the provision of spatial data validation, GIS and ETL
services, and support and maintenance of the Department’s spatial data products and web mapping applications. This includes
support for and enhancement of the Department’s Oracle Spatial environmental database, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS
Enterprise, FME Server, and NR Maps web mapping applications.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage GIS, database, and web mapping applications for the publication of the Department’s natural resource datasets.
2. Develop updates and enhancements to the Department’s spatial environmental database, GIS, ETL, and web applications, and
scientific publication databases.
3. Liaise with staff and stakeholders to ensure the timely provision of scientific data products, applications and databases that
meet the Department’s business requirements.
4. Participate in the development and adoption of standards and processes for the publication of natural resource datasets.
5. Provide technical advice on information technologies that will benefit the management and publication of the Department’s
natural resource datasets.
6. Provide training and technical support to departmental staff and stakeholders in the use and operation of the Department’s
GIS spatial and web mapping applications.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline (e.g. environmental science, spatial science, or computer science).
2. Demonstrated experience in the maintenance and management of spatial and scientific data and systems.
3. Experience in the use of spatial software (ESRI products, QGIS) and FME for the storage, processing, and manipulation of
scientific and spatial data.
4. Proven understanding and experience in the administration of Oracle and/or SQL Server relational databases.
5. Knowledge of ESRI distribution technology (ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise) and its application for spatial
data publishing.
6. Highly developed oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to prepare data standards, procedures and
processes, and to deliver training and guidance to staff and stakeholders.
7. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and communicate clearly with staff, stakeholders, and the public.
Desirable
1. Experience in the development, management, and maintenance of web mapping applications.
2. Postgraduate qualifications related to spatial data, remote sensing or environmental systems.
3. Ability to engage with stakeholders, gain consensus and develop business cases for spatial data and systems solutions to meet
business needs.
